Memorial Day - 2015

No politics today. Only humility, awe and gratitude for those in uniform who gave everything for this nation. Their loss is unfathomable; their gift to us immeasurable. Let us each strive to be worthy as we celebrate and defend their legacy.

Thanks, Neal. We shouldn't ever need a reminder, but alas, there is a growing number of our countrymen who do. (That's not politics, just a sad fact-of-life.)

Never forget.

Eloquently spoken, Neal. A lot of people take for granted the freedoms we have. These freedoms were bought with blood, sweat, and tears of those before us and those who continue to serve today. God bless all those who have chosen to stand up for our freedoms and may we never forget their sacrifices on this day, and every day.

Today is the day set aside to honor our war dead. We honor those who have given all to defend our liberties and protect our freedoms. We hang our flags at half mast until noon, we place flowers and flags on graves of the fallen. And as a nation, we pause at 3:00PM in a moment of silence to remember those who have fought and died for us.

This is also a day to enjoy the liberty we have inherited. We gather with family and friends, boating and grilling, playing volley ball and we eat potato salad and go to the ball game. Some of us head out to the range (and have the rain drive us away) and others watch the summer's first blockbusters at the theatre. Enjoy this long weekend with family and friends, please spend a moment remembering those who died so we can enjoy weekends such as these.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Major John McCrae - 1915
Canadian military doctor
and artillery commander

Six seconds to live...

If you want to read about men doing their duty read this "Six Seconds" by Lt. Gen. John Kelly. What a story of what selfless Americans have been doing for over 225 years. "People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf." God bless the rough men.

I miss the parades we use to have here in downtown Monterey with all the military personnel, tanks, and equipment on display.

When Fort Ord closed, that all went away.
