I have a 1980 F100 i am restoring. It has a 302 which i am rebuilding with some upgrades for more Horsepower. I was wondering if i should change the trans out ? It has the 3 speed overdrive stick in it presently. Any ideals ?
Whats wrong with the one you have? A mildly built 302 shouldn't be too much for most trans. It would help if you could let everyone know what you want the trans to do. Are you looking for stronger? Smoother? More gears? Auto?
The Mazda/Ford 5sp, is plentiful in the Ford small block bolt pattern, it's a light duty trans and reverse is a lil tall. The ZF542 is heavier duty, but bigger and more rare in the small block pattern, because it's what came in F250 and F350s and most came with a diesel, a big block 460 or an auto. You would be looking for one from a truck with the 300 or 351 most likely in a F250.
The problem with these trans is they both use a hydro clutch, and I think yours is mechanical, otherwise it would be fairly straight forward. To convert, you would need a pedal assembly and MC from a hydraulic clutch truck 1986 or older. There may be other years that will work, but I'm not sure. You also need to cut holes to mount the MC on the firewall. Do a search, there is a lot of info on here for doing the swap.
