I was wondering if anyone here had experimented with water injection? Its been quite a few years ago but there used to be water injection systems available that were supposed to help with carbon build up and improve fuel mileage. They used an available vacuum source like the pcv hose to draw water vapor into the engine.
You don't need it and won't profit from it if you do normal driving.
Water has a high evaporation temperature and the idea behind water injection is to have the liquid evaporate in the intake and thus cool and make denser the incoming mixture. Helps prevent preignition. The technique works in high -stress situations like fighter aircraft takeoffs and dragstrips but won't do you any good in day-to-day driving.
Most of the old stuff was scam. You don't see much of them around anymore.
Yars ago i made up a simple water vapor system for my 72 Bronco. At 204,000 miles the 302 lost a timing chain. When we broke down the engine my mechanic noted how clean the heads and valves were. Upon rebuild the water vapor set up disapeared from the shop. Since I did not have plans or pictures, I never bothered to try it again, but this post has got me interested again and I may try to put one together again. I don"t recall if it increased my milage, but it did not do any harm.
Appreciate the feedback. The idea intrigued me so much I went ahead and put one together this morning and installed it. I don't really expect any gains in mpg's but if it helps a little with carbon build up then it was worth the few dollars I put in it. Time will tell.
