wiring or hydrolic problem please help

Hi fellas,

I recently purchased a 96 f350 4x4 with rugby aluminum dump bed, with a western v plow. the truck only has 61,000 miles and is in generally good condition.

I was aware of a few problems but the price was right, as long as I can get these things figured out my self I well be ok.

The truck was pretty much "jerry rigged" as far as the wiring for the plow and dump box. I will ask about the plow on another post if I do not find what I need on line. One task at a time.

As far as the dump box, this is my confusion, after messing with it for a while, at first the s0lenoid just clicked. Now I've gotten the motor to run, but the box doesn't lift, only moves about a centimeter, then settles back onto the blocks. (I jacked it up about 10 inches and blocked it for safety to access the pump and solenoid.) motor continues to run but gets quieter and quieter. the hydrolic lines are getting extremely hot. the motor, pump, and solenoid remain cool?

What is going on?? I am inexperienced with this system. the pump appears to be set up with two valves or up and down with wires to both, the solenoid only has three post. and the oil in resevor appears to be in good condition and at least 3/4 full. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have found nothing on google.

Thank you,
Dan

I haven't seen one with two valves. Usually they have one. Usually the hydraulic pump is hooked directly to the lift cylinder. When the pump runs, it pumps fluid from the reservoir into the cylinder making it extend. When you want to stop extending the cylinder, you simply stop the pump. When it pumps it goes through a check valve so when you stop the pump and the fluid tries to come back from the cylinder into the pump, it can't, the check valve stops it.

To let the cylinder down, there is one valve that is operated electrically. It bypasses the check valve in the system. So when you activate the lowering solenoid, it lets the fluid from the cylinder go around the check and go back to the reservoir.

If the lowering valve is stuck open, that would let the fluid go around and around without going into the cylinder and pushing it up.
