I have an 01 Navigator with around 85,000 miles. It has a couple of issues, minor and major. The first is the OD light blinks. We got the Navi a year ago and its always done this. The second is the GPS system comes on but doesn't work. The major problem is the rear brakes (I'm hoping its that and not the tranny) A week ago my husband replaced the rotors, disc brakes and parking shoes on the rear. The passenger side gives off a burning smell and I think something may be sticking but then yesterday I went to go in reverse and it tried but it wouldn't go. It felt as if something was stopping it no matter how much gas I gas gave it. It would start to go but then I would feel a jerk and it stays in a stopped position. It doesn't feel like the tranny and there are no noises. I can drive forward with no problem. I hope this isn't to confusing as it is hard to describe. Thanks!
Also it is not throwing any codes so I am stumped.
To me it sounds like it might be sticky brake shoes in the parking brake drum. Either broken springs, or maybe improperly installed. The brake shoes sticks and applies harder when you go in reverse, while they loosen up when you go forward if the springs or other hardware is either broken or improperly installed.
Any brake fluid leaking from the rear brake caliper? Brake fluid on the rotor will cause the burning smell and grabbing. If there's no fluid then it's likely a sticking caliper back there.
