Parking brake

I have an 03 E-350 with 4 wheel disc brakes and 30K on it. It seems that the parking brake is getting weak lately. Is there an adjustment for it or does this mean the pads are worn out.( I believe it's a separate drum in the rear rotor)

Also noticed my brake fluid has dropped a fair amount and I don't have any leaks. I guess this could only reflect significant wear on either the front or rear pads. The backs were done once so that only leaves the front. I'll pull a wheel but it sure seems premature for 30K. I do carry a lot of weight.

I had the same thing to the brakes. Yeah, I think these have a mini drum within the rotor housing and the pads have like 1/32" of brake pad material on them (new!).

These parking brakes work via cables & levers, independantly from the hydraulic brake system. They have brake shoes that apply to drum surfaces inside rear rotors & are adjustable for wear. I believe the parking brake foot pedal assembly is supposed to adjust for wear, but also suspect there's additional cable adjustment & possibly another adjustment at each rear wheel. I've read that there's not much to them & any dragging/binding can wear them out quickly, in which case you'd hear metal on metal grinding.

Self adjusting disc brakes all around means that brake fluid level drops more rapidly than disc/drum designs. Pad wear is compensated for increasing the fluid in all 4 calipers, whereas auto adjusting rear drums compensate mechanically.
