Flathead Block Heater

I was thinking this question would be extremely regional even before I saw the recent thread from a member in Texas on cooling, and here I am already thinking heat.

I pulled the radiator out of my F4 today to have it checked out and cleaned up. Since I'm replacing all hoses, etc, I figured the time was right. The truck has a circulating tank heater right now, as well as a pair of the old-school head-stud heaters. I assume that the head-stud heaters do not work, although I have yet to test them.

The 239 showing one of the head-stud heaters.

Does anyone have any experience with the head-stud heaters? Are any still around, or are they long gone?
Currently, one of the lower hoses has a nice galvanized tee, with a reducing off shoot for the tank heater. It isn't a bad setup, but I was wondering if anyone had come across something better.

I have a block heater on my I6. Like you, I have not tested it. Does trigger some discussion with the observant types.

I don't trust them. I had one a Canadian friend gave me, I just don't see how they can be the equal of a solid steel bolt as far as holding a torque. But apparently they were pretty common back in the day up north.

I ran my 48 pickup as a daily for 10 years. (Its down for an engine rebuild) It would start at -25F... in fact it would start when nothing else would. On those nights, I did place a small ceramic heater under the hood aimed at the distributor and carb.

The inline type hose heaters work very well . Get a set for your lowwer Rad hoses if there is enough space and use silicone hose .
