I'm thinking my next F150 will have the 2.7 Liter EcoBoost. I was wondering what everyone's impressions were. I do tow a boat that weighs about 4,200 pounds. I also tow my car (on a trailer). I switched to an open trailer for ease of use and ease of towing. That setup probably weighs just over 5,000 lbs.
How is it for towing? I like the start/stop idea as I spend a lot of time sitting at traffic lights. How is that feature working out? Did anybody switch from a 3.5 EcoBoost to the 2.7? I'll probably look at the 2016's when the 2017's comes out.
I think most people are really surprised by the 2.7EB. I test drove a Lariat with that engine and was very favorably impressed. if the bottom end and top end are beefed up like they are in the 3.5EB, this will be a very popular engine choice.
These guys tried to do a "real world" test on just the highway mileage for a Lariat F-150 with the 2.7EB, and this 12 minute video shows the results. They also cross-checked the dashboard display versus what they actually poured in the tank.

The weight on the 3.5L and the 2.7L are nearly the same so it must be built heavy from the bottom end like the 3.5L.
Haven't driven one, but the numbers alone are impressive. More power and torque than the old 5.4L V8 at lower RPMs, all in a truck several hundred pounds lighter. I'm also interested in a truck with this engine.

I wonder if the 2.7 liters size came about. Was it because it's half the size of the 5.4 or that just a cool coincidence?
It might be by design to some extent. Some designer might have said something like "I can make an engine 1/2 the size of the 5.4 V8, and produce more power", and the race was on. Of course that's pure speculation. But, for sure, there is almost zero cross-over between the two designs.
Hmmm, since I'm still in my '02 5.4 3:55 locking diff, I reckon that 2.7 would surely do better than I'm used to! I'll be looking real hard at this engine when I do finally get new truck.
These engines are nothing short of amazing. If someone came up to me 5 years ago and told me ford would be releasing a full size f-150 capable to tow my boat and if would have a 2.7 liter engine I would have thought I was being told the biggest load of bull-ish ever.
