ambulance alternator

So five years ago I swapped my 7.3 engine with a 1992 (or early 93? I forget now..) e350 ambulance with a lot less miles. Since then my red battery light has been on. I want to finally try to nail this nuisance.

I used the alternator from the ambulance. I was told it was a heavier one for all the lights, and it is bigger.

Now I don't remember the details from back then or what was going through my head, all I can do is look at how it is now. I have a large ground wire grounded at bottom of engine, a small red, small white, and large cable coming off the starter relay hooked up. There's also another somewhat heavier gauge wire coming out of a harness that is wrapped with tape. This wire is hot, and I'm guessing is supposed to hook to something but I'm not sure where.

Here's a picture if it helps.

Since my signature isn't showing its a 1991 f350 with a 92 e350 7.3 idi

Is the mystery wire your charge wire from alt to solenoid?

I'v had a problem with my alt that i never did figure out. My regulator has two wires that go to the alt. a red and something else. If i hook up just the red it will charge. But if i hook up the other wire too like the instructions say it won't charge.

I'm not sure. If it were, where would I put it on the alternator? The same post as the other hot wire? It has a pretty big loop on it.

I still have my old alternator. I'm going to dig it out and look at it. If I remember right, it was quite different.

It looks like the mystery wire also comes from the starter relay, and from the same post as the other bigger hot wire.

I'm getting 11.80 volts on the batteries and not increasing. Other 12v systems I have sit around 12.50 and charge into the 14s while it's running.

Does anyone know exactly how to hook up these alternators

I'm thinking about having it tested to see if the alternator itself is bad.

If I get a chance tomorrow I'll see how I hooked it up.
I can't help you with your wiring harness because mines in a 77 f250 but, I can tell you what is suppose to go to the terminals.
This alternator is also adjustable.
