I have found a 1995 complete engine with good looking up pipes on it. I checked with IH and they show that the same up pipes are used from 1994-1998 Then from 1999-2004 or so. The engine serial #at the line of demarcation ends in something like 990. They call it the 444E. So...i'm figuring that the up pipes on this 1995 should fit my e99. Yes or no? If yes then...can you tell by looking at them if they are the bellowed up pipes or not without disassembly? BTW the book refers to them as the "Bellows Up Pipe Kit".
So the big difference is that part that looks like an accordion? And what about the doughnut issue on the ends? Do the Bellowed pipes still use the doughnuts? That kit is about $1000 from IH for the e99.

I'm presuming that the 'collector' is the 'baby's butt'? At $1000 would the IH kit come with one of those? I recently read a guy's post and he said it came with. That might help explain the higher cost of that kit. If so...they're the same from '94-'98 according to the IH book. I'm also guessing that only Ford used the older stuff for that half year in '99.
Yes, the babies butt is definitely different. The turbo mount is not the same from OBS to Super Duty.
Typically, up-pipes come with the collector - but I think the collector is the same on stock and bellowed up-pipes.
The 444 and 7.3's have similar archeticture for the given years. (i.e., mechanical fuel pump in the valley pre-'99). I have found the exhaust manifolds are sometimes different (but up-pipes still fit either style - the Int'l ones are different shape to clear the frame and won't fit in a Super Duty).
The donuts provide a seal that allows for thermal cycling (expansion/contraction) of the up-pipes. There is a flange at the collector that holds the pipe by applying pressure to the donuts. (Flange is kinda like the nut on a compression fitting and the donut is like the ferrule)
This design has a limited lifespan because the pipes end up wearing/thinning where they move in the donuts. Some have tried just using larger donuts and/or swedging the pipes for a tighter fit - but you really need to replace the pipes for the longest-lasting results.
The bellowed up-pipes use a rigid connection and a metal gasket at the collector. The 'bellows' compensate for the movement and have a MUCH longer service life.
Historically, bellowed up-pipes for E99 were 2x as much as L99+. At those prices, it was worth upgrading to L99 and use the cheaper up-pipes....

Thats what I'm in the process of doing. Bought everything to convert over to the L99. Just waiting on the weather to clear. Hopefully next week let the fun begin.
