I poked my head out of the cave yesterday, just long enough to sniper cylinder #2 with the Buck$Zooka. To abbreviate for the newbies here:
9 brand new Stage II 160/100 injectors (not remans or rebuilds). I say 9 because "Stinky" is cursed... by his owner... and swapping did ensue.
Mystery damage shows up in injectors 2 and 7. FFD makes good on warranty. 2 and 7 fail again. I find air in fuel and fix. I send my #9 to FFD as a core and buy stick #10 (to be fair to FFD for sending free parts with rush shipping to cover my screw-up). Awaiting stick, then will discuss the remainder of making it right with FFD.
How do I know it's #2? Dual EGT gauges hinted at a problem on the driver side (50-100 degrees F low), poor performance, and a dip in economy. IR gun and AE PERDELs confirmed #2, but the problem is intermittent - so it took a while to be certain.
Dude... Rich... what are we going to do with you? How many injectors have you been through in 2 years?
I can't say too much, I'm about to swap out a motor because mine is using oil... However, my motor will cost about as much as your injectors...
Air in fuel will do that when you really use the go juice. Just a warning to those looking to power up.
I'm almost certain this 'jector venture has cost me more than a motor would have. I chased my tail countless times, costing me much in troubleshooting and needless repair work. Stinky has used 2 tanks of fuel since Christmas, and the time away has allowed me to settle down and really evaluate everything.
Other than the weirdness of #2, Stinky has been performing flawlessly. I think I have a chance at getting this buttoned up for good, but there is a lot of damage to my trust in the truck. #2 popping loose on my last vacation (November) pretty much had me hangin' the keys up... if not throwing them across the room... at the toilet.
Stickus Dripititus- a condition caused by a hybrid electron-hydro carbon organism which moves about the victim's nervous, musculoskeletal, and cardiovascular systems. Symptoms come and go and seem to respond to to treatment, giving a false sense of remission , only to reappear and require a completely different treatment. The only known cure can be had for $10k down and $850/month for 6 years.
I've been living with this condition for over a year.
I don't trust perdels. My latest swap, #7, made a big difference, and it was only showing 0.5 perdel. Canceling an injector while watching MFD is what put the spotlight on #7.
You'd better go find some wood to knock on! I went 14 years without popping a VC.
I know, huh? With my kind of hubris, I'll soon find myself immersed in Tugly's valve popping videos this summer, in a mad scramble of self study to learn where the heck the bolts are, let alone what torque setting to apply.
In the meantime, I'm actually looking for some wood to knock on. I bought one of those Autometer center dash two gauge clusters, and thought to have it dipped in the same burlwood that the Lariat doors have, but alas, does any company do dash dipping anymore? Totally off topic, but knocking on wood started it.
JenC, the avatar you speak of could only come from an astoundingly complex and creative mind like Tugly's, who both conceived and created it himself.
Slightly off-topic, but you think I could get the original file for that Buck$Zooka .gif?...

Uh... yeah... that's me in the gif. It would feel weird to spread that around. I do really appreciate the compliment, though.

I didn't feel like popping the VCs to disable one injector that's intermittently revealing itself - so I monitored PERDELs under certain conditions for a while, to back up my temperature tests.

The exact same thing was said of the 160/100s. In all honesty - if I was more competent as a diesel mechanic, this would have lasted just one year... not three. I say "just one year" because my Buck$Zooka was stuck on rapid-fire to abbreviate the calendar.
