so i sent the purple and orange wire to my msd box, and clipped the harness out (it was melted and hidious) and so i figured the black wire is a ground.....but i grounded it and the engine won't fire....it fired once when it was hooked up to the orignal - going to the original coil.... but not i've got nothing at all (1976 by the way)
what do i need to do with the black wire to make it work?
SuperSwamper, the black wire coming out of the distributor isn't used in the MSD hookup. You can ground it, but it'll have no effect, since the wire is grounded to start with.
On the MSD 2 wire harness, the violet splices to the Ford orange wire. The green splices to the Ford violet. (Black Ford wire is not used)
On the other side of the box, the red goes to the positive wire coming from the firewall (or the positive terminal on the original coil connector; the connector is not connected to the coil). The orange goes to the coil positive terminal, and the black goes to the coil negative terminal. The white is not used.
And of course, the two heavy wires go to a direct battery hookup, red to positive, black to negative.
