looking to step into a f250/350 with a v10, have researched a bunch and decided the ford v10 to be my best bet, as it has power with its bad fuel economy compared to the 6.0 chevy or the 5.7 hemi. and dont want the expense of a diesel, anyway will be towing a stock trailer that we use to haul wood with, loads will vary, dry wood 10k wet wood 15 to 20k. ( i know its diesel heavy but it only happens a few times each summer). dont really see alot of 3 valve v10s for sale in the area, 2 valves are much more common, and usually priced slightly lower but overall the 3 valve v10s are usually in better shape and of course are newer, with most having less miles than their 2 valve competitors. am wondering if i should pull the trigger on a 2v v10 with 90k miles or wait for a 3v with about the same amount of miles and similar price go pop up again, i know 3v has more power but thats about it. i have time to wait as wont need the truck right away, currently use a 92 f150 with a 4.9 and a 16ft flatbed trailer, so even a 5.4 would be a step up lol
What year is the 2 valve you are looking at? I would stick to the 02-04, they had more threads in the spark plug holes, more power from the PI heads, better headlights, signal mirrors and a 12k/6k towing capacity.
My 99 is rated at 10k/5k but I can change the bolts for more. Also If you are looking to tow 15K you may need to upgrade a hitch or even a dually wouldn't be far off.
In my experience in the full-size truck gas engine comparison the 5.7 Hemi and the Chevy 6.0 really aren't all that much better if any at all on fuel mileage for the year of trucks you're looking at, the Chevy 6.0 is pathetic, regardless of how hard you rev it you really don't go any faster and the HEMI 5.7 while snappy unloaded will put the supposedly high revving 2V V10 to shame at how high it can rev while towing.
Both the 2V and the 3V V10 will play with what your pulling but I would personally walk away from any of them that have the low 3.73 gears unless you want to do a gear swap in the future. I was in a similar position as you and waited and found a 06 F350 V10 with 4.10 gear's by pure luck and love it! It plays with my little 35ft GN flatbed with 14 round bales of hay.... And you think you tow hevy, lol.
Lol I have seen that pic many times. Grandpa use to haul 10 round bales behind his 79 f150 on a 28 foot gooseneck. Of course I followed him with that load at the ripe age of 16 and a few years after.
Was looking at all years but will narrow up the search to 02 and newer.
I bought my 03 a couple of years ago with about 80k on it. If I had the opportunity to choose, I would've picked a 3V. Not because of the engine but because of the 5 speed auto and coil front suspension (and the tighter turning radius that comes with the coils).
I like my 2V. With the Y-pipe mod and tunes from 5 Star, I'd like to think I'm making close to what a stock 3V makes. Doesn't really matter what it makes on paper, though. It handles the chores I throw at it just fine. (although I am someday planning for 4.56 gears to make the mountain passes a little easier to get over)
i hear ya twiggs my grandpa has a 2000 chevy 2500 with a 6.0 as a farm truck, they didnt have the heavy duty model that year so it doesnt even have full floating hubs. and since its a 2000 its the lower hp 6.0 and wow, at 4500 rpm you should at least move the speedo lol.
also im assuming the 6/k 12k numbers are for bumper pull and gooseneck? or for 3.73 or 4.10 gears? the trailer will probably be a bumper pull unless i can finder some goosenecks cheaper so im looking for as much conventional tow rating as i can get, will add a weight distributing hitch to help in that regards as well.
I can't answer any real questions except to say that my affordable choices very were limited and eventually I found myself purchasing a 2002 V10 w/ 2 valves AND 180K apparently abused miles. I sent it to the shop for about 2K in services and then used it for 2 years/ 4K miles pulling my 10K (loaded) fifth wheel. It did everything I asked of it.
Only earlier today did I purchase another tow vehicle (2014 F250 6.7L). This 02 V10 will shortly go to market and make someone a decent little economical (excluding MPG) work horse.
And this is likely one of my last postings on this forum as I'll be moving over to the 6.7 forum for yet another education.
