this morning my 02 decided to turn the ABS light on, and start bouncing the speedometer. plus, the OD light is flashing when stopped with foot on the brakes, but the trans is shifting fine.
nothing changed on the truck except almost 3 inches of rain fell last night.
well, it gets deeper. pulled and cleaned the VSS. no go.
replaced the VSS with a known good spare off the shelf.
hook up AE, and find out AE will not work with Win 8.1, so i have to get new software.
dig up the old laptop and hook it up, when trying to check ABS get this: communications could not be established with controller.
check connection or validate that vehicle support for controller.
when i did a scan for DTC's one of them was for lack of communication with ABS module.
both the 60 amp maxi fuse and the 10 amp mini fuses are good.
there is a cluster of wires on the drivers side fender down below the master cylinder, they are tough to see,i found some frayed wires there by looking up from underneathright around where the oil filter goes, they had been rubbing on the fender well and wore through ,looking from the top they appeared fine, they come along the frame from the rear it might be worth checking them
i think i found it.
stopped at the body shop this morning. of course this morning the light was out, speedometer worked and OD light was out.
the mechanic suggested bleeding the brakes again, saying there may still be an air bubble in the ABS unit from when i blew the brake lines last fall. put the pressure pot on, and sure enough, got 3 bubbles out of the lines.
brake pedal is a lot firmer now too.
not sure why that would effect the speedometer though.

Whether you do or don't have 4 wheel abs, check the front abs wires. If you don't there will be 2 bundles of wire behind fenders, visible from the bottom.
Mine weren't capped in any way, just plugs hanging out with contacts exposed.
To be fair, i'm not sure if you'r truck doesn't have 4w abs they are actually connected anywhere at all, thus making everything I just written useless.
Helpful thread, just started having this problem myself. Of course, I drove through three feet of water when south Houston flooded hard on Tuesday so I'm sure that I've got water in the connectors at a minimum. ABS and OD stop flashing and the speedo starts working on long left turns and rough roads. Really hoping it's the connectors and sensors and not frayed wires. All was perfect before the deep water expedition...

That sounds like you have water in your rear end.
Pun intended.

That's what I'm thinking as well. Don't have extended vent lines, and the water was well over the tires. Diff oil change is on the list of things to address, and probably needs done anyway. I haven't changed it since I bought it (70k miles ago) and have no idea when the PO did it either.

How long are the stock ones anyway?
I wonder if the 'off road' trim makes a difference.
