With a $2,000 budget for suspension and disc brakes, what would you guys recommend?
I'm going for a lower look, and decent handling. It's a 1964 f100 power brake, manual steering, posi track rear end, drum brake, original motor car.
I would rebuild the stock suspension. King pins, bushings, tie rod ends, shackles and I would pay special attention to the steering gear. The king pins get blamed for a lot of the old truck ride but a lot of the time the culprit is a worn steering box or a combination of all the above.
The stock suspension is robust and is a real pleasure if new/renewed. It's easily lowered, simply removing leaves, mono leaf, some will flip the axle....."it's not really a flip the springs are put under the axle instead of over it." Disk brake kits are available for it, I would make sure I used 5x5.5 rotors to mat the rear pattern.
Newer double master cylinders bolt on as well as booster master cylinders.
This stock stuff is pretty straight forward and think it will fit in your budget. be sure to check specs before replacement.....theres no need to replace good parts.
As far as MII, Crown VIc,Jag, Camaro clips and suspension, consider the shape of the donor parts and these swaps always have hidden cost..... Lots of unexpected nickle and dime stuff.
Thanks for the advise, I think I might go that route. Any idea on what it would cost to rebuild the stock suspension and convert to disk brakes all the way around?
