Feedback carb. In my haynes it says to adjust the fuel mixture screw all the way out then work your way in. All other carbs ive ever done was all the way in then back it out. Is that a typo or is that correct?
Typically you start at a baseline. With engine off turn all the way in until lightly seated, then turn out a set amount (two turns is good). From there start it up, let run to operating temperature, and adjust to get highest manifold vacuum reading always adjusting curb idle to spec after each tweak as it will rise when you're going the right way.
I do know you turn one all the way out and the screw just comes out and if you're lucky the spring won't shoot it across the yard.
Yeah, ive tuned 1 or 20. But with all the weird crap this feedback system has to have work for it to work it wouldnt surprise me if i needed to back it out to start at closed.
If the feedback solenoid is not working (unplugged) .... The feedback system will just keep it rich, when I did my new feedback carb install I could seat the adjustment screw, while at idle, or back it out 3-4 turns ... it always just ran the same.
I would just leave it at 1.5 - 2 turns out.

Ya'll need to refund my Dad's dues to help him out. I bought him a rebuilt feedback carb years ago from National Carburetor, and he had it rebuilt by them for $75 last year. Sent it back this weekend for the $50 core charge on an '83 non-feedback. When the gas gauge don't work and you find out on the side of the road a couple of times that you're getting about 5mpg....well, that makes the decision to switch a little easier.
