Just noticed after 6 years of owning my 04 that I bought used, that I see 2 alternators on my truck. Had no idea that it was even an option. Guess that means I have enough power to charge my cell phone.

Obviously you never changed the belts or tensioner then. It may be time.
Older thread, sorry that trick didn't work for you. What sort of issue did you run into? I've done it a bunch of times that way without problems. Feel bad it didn't work in your situation though.

Honestly I'm not sure why it didn't work I could get the tool in the slot. Didn't help that it was dark as well so I just took it off a smaller pully bolted the alternator down and then was able to get just enough slack in the belt to put it back over the smaller pully
I recently replaced mine with a DC Power 190Amp HD unit from ficmrepair.com
Works great I'm a lot happier with it. I noticed a difference with the sliding rear window working much smoother. However make you incorporate some new interconnect wiring and don't forget to hook up the old wire harness that was connected to the old alternator. Funny things happen when you don't.
