I have a renewed interest in my 79 F-150 and hope to improve the body and start driving it a bit more often. It runs perfect and other than a worn steering gear box it drives perfect as well. It has a new crate motor 351M and a new exhaust system. I added an Edelbrock high rise intake manifold and a 4 bbl carb a number of years ago which improved the MPG significantly. It has 15 x 10" rims and 33" tires, now to fix the body and get back closer to original tire size.
I have a couple questions once I start driving it more:
1. It's noisy, any suggestions for limiting road noise? Firewall....headliner....doors....floorpanels?
2. The wiring is loose between the fuel tank switch and the gauge, one tank registers empty "most" of the time. Any tips to isolate the wires inside the harness?
3. The windows are "hard" to roll up & down, I have lubed them but not much improvement.
4. I'd like a decent black bench seat cover.
1. Consider tire tread, mud tires are noisy. Don't drive so fast or get overdrive to reduce engine noise. Make sure your weatherstripping is in good condition. Insulate the ceiling-lots of noise gets amplified up from the road and reflects off the roof with a thin headliner. Insulate the floor and door panels. Seal up any open firewall holes and insulate.
2. Likely problem is the connection on the tank and or the ground nearby is corroded or dirty.
3. Did you remove the door panel and lube the regulator roller and track? maybe need to check condition of window felt strips or replace them.
4. Lots of stuff out there just have to shop for it.
I'm right there with ya bro; finally starting to "use" my 78 after pretty much just warming it up & driving it to keep it loose for the last year.
1. It's noisy, any suggestions for limiting road noise? Firewall....headliner....doors....floorpanels? Look into some stick-on heavy "tar pads"; not sure what they call them. Very good under the floor and, if you're really diligent, the firewall (apply on inside). Also, plug any open hole where seals have deteriorated.
3. The windows are "hard" to roll up & down, I have lubed them but not much improvement. Get some silicone spray and use it on the window tracks (mainly the back one). Those can get real sticky over time.

you can get the cheap aluminized peel n stick from any home improvement store. It's asphalt based. Lots of posts about it working well. just do a google search for "cheap sound deadening" I've never used it but wouldn't hesitate to when I get to that point.
No help on 2 &3 for you but on 4
I searched and couldn't find anything "cheap" (cheap is different for everyone) my truck came with a cheap one that doesn't fit right and now is falling apart. I think it's cheaper to just find a new seat or pay for a good cover. A few ppl have posted nice seat covers they picked up off amazon(?) for around 150ish I think?
I believe you can get a newer seat for less out of a junkyard.
Just make sure you test the used seat, unlike me who saw it, thought it looked ok and after getting it home, realized the springs were blew out on the side and tilted you to the window. That kid got over on me that day.
