All right guys, cool forum I've come across post almost every time I've ever searched with questions pertaining to fords. Here is mine I've recently been talking with a local dealer about the possible purchase of an 06 F250 6.0L lariat extended cab 6'4" bed with 119,000 and some miles. According to dealer and the information given to him from the previous owner it had the egg valve cleaned and oil changed recently, brakes, pads, rotors, and calipers replaced. Other than this nothing has been done to it. Since the previous owner had it. I'm from NY. Is this worth the buy I believe this is going for 15,000 give or take. If I do decide to purchase what are some things I may want to replace.

Without knowing all of the options it is hard to say, go here and check book value Used 2006 Ford Super Duty F-250 Values- NADAguides If you are set on a 6.0L you need to get yourself some gauges that read live data and take it with you when you test drive it so you can check temp spread between the ECT and EOT, FICM voltage during cranking, IPR% while at hot idle, System voltage during glow plug cycle and after.
Scan gauge II or one of the smartphone apps like dashboss for IOS devices or torque pro for android. You will need a good set of gauges for continual use after you buy a 6.0L to keep an eye on things and they help you diagnose no start problems and head things off before they leave you stranded.
I'm not dead set on the 6.0 but I seem to find more of them for sale than any of the other trucks. I really want a diesel truck for work and play. I'm in the carpentry and construction feild and i do trail construction so a big truck is sort of a necessity. The dealer spoke with the former owner and from what he told him very little major repairs. Is that a good sign or a sign that they may rear their ugly expensive little head. If I do go about purchasing one what needs to be done to bulletproof one. Should I email the dealer and ask for a Vin number to get an oasis report and get the Carfax?

The reason I asked if you were set on a 6.0L is so that you can buy an OBDII set of gauges that you can take with you on a test drive as you will need the gauge setup to use on your new 6.0 anyway. I would get the VIN and contact your local ford dealer for an oasis. The comments from the dealer concerning the previous owner carries little weight as I am sure the previous owner wasn't about to tell him about any problems with the truck. You also have to be wary ( which is why you bring gauges along to verify certain conditions of the engine ) when buying a used 6.0 as repairs can get ungodly expensive especially if you are not able to do the work yourself. The item of major concern is how well did the previous owner take care of it maintenance wise, if he tried saving a buck extending oil and filter change intervals and used aftermarket filters there can be underlying problems that are not obvious to the naked eye which is where the gauges come in.
Thanks for the offer sarge. I'm in western new York Jamestown area. The truck is currently at Dave warren auto sales (dodge dealership) I know didn't think I'd find a ford there. I looked over the engine bay and it didn't seem to have any aftermarket parts placed on it but there still could be and I just didn't recognize them. It sounded pretty good when it was running.
That's OK my friends dad has a pretty good knowledge about trucks and what to look for. Not sure if I can afford the truck at this time, but they seem to pop up around here on a fairly regular basis. Thanks for the offer Sarge261

I'm trying to get my foot unto the full sized diesel truck world and I know the stigma these puppies have but I see a fair number of them around my area and I know that many people stear away from them with all the issues that they had but they tend to be the more affordable truck. If I can get the Vin number can I take it to the local ford dealer to have am oasis report done and will it tell me how often it was serviced? Its a pretty decent truck it sounded like it ran great when the dealer started it up. But being so new to the diesel world it could have been half fried and I wouldn't have know. I did give it the once over under the truck and looked at the engine bay. No major rusting issues and from what I could tell it all looked pretty stock under hood. I will contact the dealer for more information. If I do get it what things need to be done to "bulletproof" this thing and make it my work/toy truck(more for work, construction I'm a carpenter) thanks guys.
They're good trucks. I got mine in AL with ~70K on it. Owned by a local fireman that I had seen around town. I used the truck as a daily driver during the week and then to tow my 4 horse gooseneck on the weekends. I have rolled across scales for my military move around 26K combined weight. Drove that truck and trailer from AL to MA (I78 through PA those hills suck). That was three years ago. Up until recently I have used it daily. I have a SCT tuner on it and use the canned tunes and an EGR delete on it. In June I had some coolant puke from the degas and a few days later I covered a car in white smoke doing 50mph trying to get off the highway. Since then I have had the truck parked and am getting ready to do the head studs in September. ( NOT TO HIJACK THIS POST but what website is the better one to get the kit from XDP, SINISTER etc?)
I have used this truck as a truck, I've pulled trees ~40" in diameter out of the woods to split wood. I have a 10K# dump trailer I deliver wood and gravel in. That dumb horse trailer. I go from central MA to western NY and get hay ~200 bales @ 50-70# a bale. Ive used it for off roading (its FX4 and did pretty good as a recovery truck) its ***** in the snow. Its a burnout and donut champ (just once to see how it felt), much more comfortable to drive than the gas versions of the superdutys and when cruising I can get over 20 MPG.
I love my truck I have over 170K on it now of abuse and it has done better than my buddies Cummins and D max. The 5.9 wont keep up or the 6.6 will run out of oil or something stupid like that.

Don't bother with Sinister...
I have their kit and it the hoses and compression fittings they use all started to leak on me. One hose completely came apart after awhile.
Do yourself a favor and get the Dieselsite kit. The Dieselsite kit uses barbed fittings and heater hose that if it were ever to develop a leak, you can run down to O'reilly's, Lowes, or Home Depot and buy a new hose to replace.
I just went down to the dealer to talk to the guys about the 2005 f250 6.0 crew cab. It has had some work on it from what the owner a personal friend of mine said it had the egr replace and some other stuff done but no major engine, coolant, transmission, ficm, or hpop. It has 150,000 miles on it and he also knew the previous owner and said that knowing him he was good about doing maintence. He also mention that the previous owner put in about 3,000 some odd dollars worth of repairs ( he didn't say what they were). With my trade in I can get it for 250 a month. Also when and if I do take it for a test drive what should I look for and listen for when starting up and running it. Thanks guys.
So does anyone have any info on whether or not I should go ahead with this purchase. I was thinking about taking it for a test drive this weekend to see how it runs. If I do what should I look for when I start it up and while it's running. Oh and I don't have a scanner a bit expensive for me at the moment.
