So my truck is a 90 250 7.3 4x4 and it has a banks turbo. Is this something I should keep on it it was not stock for that year not that I wanna really keep stock just curious here's the one on my truck.this pic is not mine but mines set up up exactly like this (it's pouring rain so can't get a pic of mine right now.)
Why in the world would you want to take a turbo off an idi? Many of us have been running turbos on non turbo motors for years without problems. Once you drive an idi turbo you don't want to go back to n/a.
Ok cool so I'm guessing I should keep the stack as well this is my first diesel and its kind of a project truck I got it for 1200 bucks so I'm sure I'll have more silly questions.lol but hey thats how you learn right.
The banks kit as it is now isnt so great. The intake housing can be a pain in the rear to do filters on properly. I've mitigated this in the past by placing a 4" filter where the black cold air hose goes. Didnt really affect performance much, but everyone will tell you otherwise.
The best thing I ever did with the same kit - ditch the whole intake box. I bought an intake snail hat from a burnt up IDI with an ATS turbo, added 2" aluminum welded in a custom elbow shape, and used a 2-2.5" adapter... In hindsight i would have just welded 2.5" pipe to the hat, one less seal. Some people make custom hats or intake manifolds, such as racinn...
What I described is for the boost side. The filter side, I reused the rubber elbow that attaches to the turbo intake, i believe it was an elbow adapter for 3.5", some boiling water and swearing and i stretched it onto 4" pipe for an intake. The sky is the limit here but i just run it straight to near the radiator. Runs great, breathes a helluva lot better, filters are easier to source and swap out... There isnt much heat in the front of the truck when moving... My future goal is to jam it in the front of the grill for a ram air effect.
To finish it off, i took it apart when putting my new engine in. I had the exhaust manifolds, all exhaust pipe, turbo, and downpipe ceramicoated to keep a lot of the heat going through the turbo. Flooring it I see up to 8psi, with a Uhaul injection pump turned 1.5 flats... Almost no smoke and minimal EGTs
Wanting to try a cam swap, and definitely want a bigger pump. I dont know anything about A/R or sizing on this turbo... Just that it is not wastegated, but i do have a picture of the tag and a/r# cast into it somwhere. Mine responded a lot better with just the intake work but the ceramicoat made it a whole different animal. After a hard drive i can touch the pipes and they are hot but they dont burn me... The sound is awesome too.
Im curious to see if a bigger pump would wake it up more, i dont have any smoke unless I lug it and then its minimal.
I'm a big believer in Banks products, as you can see with my powerstroke, I had an 86 f-350 W/ 6.9, I put a worked 7.3 pump bigger lines and injectors, problem I had with the banks turbo I had on it there was no way to get my boost up, 6-7 pounds was top and I added all this fuel, I needed at least 18-20 pounds of boost, but those early systems just were just not built for it. So she rolled coal and time I was more than half way into the throttle, It had the 4 speed with granny low 1st. I sold it for a 2000 f-350 PSD dually 4X4, then sold that for big blue which I am still driving, Stock I push 25 pounds of boost, now I'm in the 40's. Lots more options for the PSD but I will never forget my first truck, first truck I bought new.
my 88 has had a banks non wastegated turbo on it since new with under 4,000 miles. it now has a little over 494,000 hard run miles on it, and still purrs like new.
while searching a local yard I came across a tailgate with a good insert and an older banks sidewinder. I can get both for 600.
Now for the turbo it is the one with the square airbox. It is missing the top of the airbox.I get everything including exhaust pipes. There is no EGT or boost gage. I felt the turbine on the intake side spun free and not alot of play.
We plan on getting about a 10k gvw travel trailer. So the turbo would help.
How much of a PITA will be for me to pull everything. I do not know if they would pull the truck out a keep it up for me to do the underside.
Here is what I was planning taking with me:
Plenty of water for me
Plenty of PB Blaster
1/2 socket set
3/8 socket set
24" 1/2 " breaker bar
floor jack and jackstands just in case
plywood to lay on
anything else is this a one man or two man job?
Ther to hurdles I have get. First convince DW that I need a turbo for FATHER'S day and second it is still there in 2 weeks
