i have a 96 ranger with a 2.3l engine sometimes it will start right up and sometimes it has to crank 4 or 5 times to start i just gave it a tuneup and changed the oil and filter. should i run sea foam through the oil system,it sat for about seven years and i need to convert the idiot gauge to a real gauge.
What did the "tune up" consist of???? Seeing as how you say it sat for 7 years, did you First drop the tank to clean it out & flush the fuel lines & fuel rail & replace the fuel filter Before starting it????
When its acting out on a start, what happens if you cycle the ignition key from Off, to On (but don't crank the engine), so the fuel pump runs & turns off, about 4 times, Then go to Start to crank the engine, will it then immediately fire & run???? If so, look to a fuel pump, clogged pump sock pre-filter, or clogged fuel filter, or maybe a fuel pump power relay causing a voltage drop to the pump, problem/s.
EDIT: Don't put Seafoam into the engine oil. Why do you think you need a solvent in your engine oil????
Put the Seafoam in the gas tank at the prescribed ratio, if you want to try & tidy up the fuel injectors & decarb the combustion chamber.
Some thoughts for consideration, let us know what you find.
I had trouble starting my ranger up in some mornings, espeically when I was on a 1/4 tank of gas. I got a new fuel filter and pump and it starts right up now (once nad a blue moon I need to do a 2nd crank. Not sure if its my fuel pump relay. (i have a new starter so its not that)
