Okay guys I need your help!!! I have a 1993 Bronco 5.8L with a open differential in the rear with 3.55 gearing (code 19). I was getting a whining noise around 40 mph coming from the rear end and felt a clunk when I put it into reverse so I took my truck in and had them check it out. The mechanic at the transmission shop told me that the carrier pin hole was starting to oval out and was causing the clunking in reverse and whining noise at 40 mph and above. Just to replace the carrier he quoted me $ 700 !!! To do a complete overhaul of the differential (bearings and everything) would be $1300!!! From what I understand from the mechanic the only thing wrong here is the carrier pin hole is ovaled and all the rest of my gears look fine and don't show any wear or chipping. from what I have seen parts can't be over $400. Is this pricing out of hand? Can you recommend a place to get new/used carriers? Thanks in advance for your help.
heh, shops will cost you a arm and a leg most of the time. If i where you i would just find a used low milage junkyard axle to put in your truck. any 8.8 would work under your truck. that will cost you about 400-500$ for a good axle assembly.
if you want it to be fixed i would either do it myself or try and find a lower installation price.
