It's not too bad, It's rusty but It's not shot. It's sat more in the last 5 years than driven.
It's got a couple o-rings leaking fuel on top of the injectors. Needs filters and fluid changes and some TLC.
What is the axle in this thing and can you tell me the gears? Sticker says axle code 73 which I think is Dana 60 3.54?
Front end is definitely in need of some work. Lots of play going down the road. If I decide to get it, bushings and joints will be done.
There's also a f250 of similar vintage sitting in the next town over from me with a painted frame and decent body. No motor and been sitting for years... Sounds like I should buy that cheap and dump the motor in it!
Coolant looked beautiful, He did use Motorcraft glow plugs when he changed them out so that's nice.
Other than the fact that it tracks almost as straight as a kid driving home late at night after his 21st birthday party, it rode well.
Another thing I noticed... There was something where the smog pump would be on a gasser, shouldn't be a smog pump on a diesel right? Vacuum pump maybe?
If it's below the alternator on the pass side, yes that's a vacuum pump. That's for your brake booster and the HVAC controls, and the cruise if you have it.
I looked up code 73, it's a 6300lb rated Dana with the 3.54 like you thought. That's a good setup for fuel mileage and all around duties, but not so much towing heavy. 4.10's are better for that.
The sticker says GAWR front is 3850 so it has the dana 44ttb hd in the front.

Thanks Dave!
It does have cruise... On the turn signal switch! I thought they were all in the wheel like my 86. Is this an OE setup?

Sounds like a add-on unit. The factory used a large round diaphragm unit to pull on the throttle. If you have a square box with just wires going to it, I am sure it's a aftermarket unit.
Definitely an aftermarket setup, could have been dealer installed, but it is not factory for sure.
Well if it could have been dealer installed that'd make sense. He said it says Ford on it, I didn't care to verify.
Do the diesels use the same cruise setup as the Gassers? If so, that'd mean I can use a gas job setup from a parts truck to put the OE controls in the wheel right?
I'm still on the fence about this but I'm strongly considering it. Depends on how much I can talk him down and how much the guy I work with thinks my truck is worth. If I can't get a decent price I sure won't get rid of it!
If the guy I work with and I come to terms I'll go look at it one last time a little closer before I decide for sure.
The diesel has basically the same cruise, but of course the throttle attachment is different. Also as you mess around with later years, they got away from the sensor in the speedo cable, and went to the sensor in the rearend. So you need to watch for that as you start mixing and matching later year trucks. By 93 or so, they did away with the speedo cable all together.
Thanks again Dave, if I pull stuff it'll probably be from my 86. I haven't gotten it on the road yet and if I get this 85 I'll probably take the niceties off the 86 (which is an XLT Lariat) and put them on the 85, and use the 86 as a jeep (it needs the frame patched anyways).
