Is it worth the money?

Hello everyone! I am looking to sell my old obs powerstroke and upgrade to the 2nd gen 7.3. I have been looking in the area and this truck seems pretty nice and it only has 142k on it. it looks very clean and almost all original, but theyre asking 17k for it. I blue booked it and it said the max was about 15k. Should I try to talk them down or not even bother with it? thanks. heres the link for a better look: 2001 Ford Super Duty F-350 Lariat 7.3 TURBO-DIESEL "POWER STROKE" ENGINE | Leesburg, Virginia | Leesburg Auto Import

Well, that's really up to you. To me, $17k is a bit steep when you consider 4-door 4x4 250's are averaging $12k - $13k

That's a long bed lariat 350 which is hard to find (if that's what you've been looking for).

It also has dual alternators and 4x4. (I'm sure it was special ordered). And, it is very clean! It most probably has the Big Gear which will pull anything but doesn't pass Diesel Fuel Stops often. If you're going to use it as a daily driver in that area you may go broke. I'm so glad I'm not up there anymore! TRAFFIC!

Mileage, (IMO), has little to do with the investment capitol. It's the overall condition of the drivetrain.

There is a dealer in Fredericksburg, VA who had [about 6 years ago] one of the best Tech's in the business when I worked their.

There is also another dealer in Dumfries, VA They also had a top-notch Tech.

Both of those Dealers have excellent reputations and see more diesels than any others in the Metro Area.

I would consider having one of them look at it to evaluate the drivetrain. Or, if at all possible I would see if you could take it to a trusted diesel shop. The only one from experience I know of is on the way to Warrenton, VA and I can't remember the shops name.

BL: Hit'em at $12.5k and settle at $14.5 - $15.5 and IMO you'll be getting a "fair" deal.

Ya gotta love that claim about average market price at $19,987...that's a used car salesman for you. That truck does look clean but to me even $17,000 is too much but I haven't been in the market for a while now. There is nothing wrong with making an offer. Ultimately you are the one who has to feel it is or is not worth the price.

Thomas, it will be my dd. what is this extra gear? I thought all 4R100s had only 4 gears. I was going to ask 12.5 first as well, and work to about 13-15k. I live in the baltimore area, which I am ashamed to admit, but i have more non traffic highway driving, not the VA/DC crap. also how can you tell the truck has dual alternators?

Nice truck Doug, Hard to find factor is in place. Used vehicle peeps know this. Put your heart into it and see what you think. VERY hard to find that package across the stars and stripes anymore. If I were to replace my reliable ars 99 and be searching, I would drop a few more bucks on something with that mileage and smile.

It obviously was loved considering the curb appeal extras bolted on.

My vote, dicker down but don't drown.

That is high for an east coast F350 4x4 SRW with 143k. How long has it been sitting on the lot? Decide what it is worth to you and offer them $1000-1500 less than that ie. if you think it is worth 14k, start at 12.5 to 13k and go from there.

You should already know what to look for when doing your inspection.

It's got the 3.73 and not the 410 so at least your not sucking the fuel down above 55. It has a 130 Amp alternator. Does not have two as I first thought. If you PM me the VIN# I'll look it up in Ford Service

Try to negotiate, but if the dealer will not get into book value range while talking offer/counter offer(s), walk away.

I'll definitely be negotiating it down. but it is a very pretty truck. can you explain what the "big gear" is? the 3.73 will definitely be a plus because I dont tow and my 4.10 is killing my mileage. I still get about 20 highway though. i think the 130 amp is enough. vin is 1FTSW31F11EC85209

To give you an idea I bought mine (see sig) in Southern California in the fall of 2007 for $21,000 with 146K on the odometer. Granted, mine is a 250, short bed, dual alternators (twin 110A), gray interior, and I do not have the backup sensors.

People thought I was crazy but I knew what I wanted and it was that truck. Just remember, it is a 14+ year old truck so it will need some TLC (time and $$$) since everything on it is old.

I would recommend spending $100 and having a mechanic that knows 7.3s check it out to make sure you're not stepping into any major problems. At the very least it gives you a bargaining chip for negotiations to either have them fix something or discount it for you to take care of it.

If it's in good shape then it's worth it as long as you think it is.

having been a ford diesel mechanic for a period of time, I know what to look for. It looks good, but believe me an 18 year old plow truck is much worse.

Most of the country - too high. PNW - about on par... but we don't salt our roads.

This is the guy I bought my truck from years ago. He imports trucks from Texas, rust free and in decent shape and gets top dollar for them up here. The 7.3's are selling for more than the 6.0's......I would look very close at the rust underneath. If it lived up here its whole life, odds are the underside is shot.

Yeah, rust is a big issue for me. My old truck is literally falling apart with only 130k. The old owners must have not known what a car wash was. I think that the truck should be relatively clean but you never know. I'm going to look at it Saturday.

I would give it a thorough look under it for rust. Should you buy it, be sure to start a rust preventative program!
