Tachometer

Hello,
I have a 1980 Ford F150 4x4 with a inline six. I wanted to know if
anyone has ever put a tach in dash on one without it. I assume that the big spot next to the speedometer was meant for a tach. Havent found much info on the search method. Just thought I'd throw the question out to the masses.
I would rather put one in dash, than mount one elsewhere in the truck for aesthetics.

I think you can, as long as your dash has gauges, and not idiot lights.

you just have to find one in the junkyard. I think you have to modify the circuit to tell it whether you have a 6cyl or 8cyl.

I bought a tach off of Ebay and hooked it up to my inline, but it doesn't seem to be acurate. I'm thinking it was for an 8 banger. Is there anyway to make it read what it's suppose to? or do I need a different tach.

Most in dash tach's are calibrated for the engine it was installed with.
If it is an aftermarket tach, it should be adjustable, so look on the back for a small curved slot that will have a 4,6,8 on it with a small lever tip exposed enough so that you can move it to what ever number of cylinders you have.
I have been told there are some out there that are adjustable, in dach typs, but have yet to see one myself.

If I remember right, I read someplace where you have to clip a resistor or solder one for 6 or 8, but i'm not a 100% sure.

If it's a factory tach, the 8 terminal will be grounded on a V8 truck, on a 6 cyl truck, the pin from the cluster plug(I forget which number ATM) will have about a 3" black lead that isn't hooked up, ground it, and it's calibrated for a V8. Only trucks that have all 4 guages have this wiring in place, trucks with idiot lights have a different cluster plug, and are not wired for a tach.

For an aftermarket tach, it depends on the manufacturer, I have seen them with wires you have to clip, a 3 position(or more) sliding switch, a rotary dial type switch, and the list goes on.
