I would like to put a 351w into my 1970 Ford f-100. Will the moter mounts and towers be the same or will I need to modify? I currently have a 360 engine and 3-speed tranny behind it. I plan on switching tranny to a C-6 when the transfer of engines is being done so I dont need info on engine to tranny details.
anyway any info would be helpful...
Thanks
Rob

Hi I have a 71 f-250 that had a 360 c-6, the motor went to hell (through the oil pan) and here FE motors are not ez to find, so I had a friend that had a 80 f-150 302 aod (got the truck for a hundred bucks) and when I got it home and started looking at them it hit me. I striped the 80 and put the drive line in my 71, everything bolted right in, and the truck drives great
Should be an easy swap. Your current motor mount towers will not work. Just get a set from a 302. They will bolt right on. You may have to slide the tranny mount crossmember a little with the C6. But that should be easy and obvious when you are installing it. The driveshaft length may also have to be modified or find the right one for a C6. That should be it really.
I put a 351W (stroker 393) in my 69 F-100 Ranger and you will need mount towers from a 73-79 Ford truck with a 302. You may have to drill a hole or two to get them mounted with the original holes already in your frame that are not being used by the 360 towers in the rear. I went with a toploader so I can't help you with your C-6 fitment but you probably will have to shorten your driveshaft. If you are planning on running headers you will not find any to fit your application but a set for a 302 for 69-79 truck will work with some tube modifications on both sides. The lower radiator hose from your 360 will fit perfect but the top one will have to picked out of the parts store lineup; I went with braided stainless steel and Earl's clamps because I had no luck in fitment. Welcome to FTE!
Rob, I think what you have in mind is do-able, and not that hard really. But why are you wanting to run a 351W ? The FE series can make more torque at idle than the small block can even dream about. have you considered using your 360 block as the basis for a 390 build ? If you're sprinting from stoplight to stoplight, the 390 wins. If you're climbing hills or pulling trailers, the 390 wins again. Now if you're looking for less fuel consumption, the 351W will win, but not by a big amount. Our trucks are about as aerodynamic as a brick wall, and mileage is very good, even when running a six cylinder. DF
OK, I have decieded to keep the 360 fe. Ive spent literally hours reading the forums and I have come to the conclusion the fe engine is worth keeping. I do plan though to still change the 3 speed out for the C6 automatic. Yes gas mileage is better in the fe. About 6mpg better than my other truck with the 351w. But I must admit I will be keeping the info handy for the engine swap if I change my mind again. (smiles) Thanks again to you all and for the site that brings us together ....
