So I sold my nice 95 F150 (pic in album). I bought a nice 02 V10. I have two major problems I need to fix. First is a few broken exhaust studs and I know the painful fix but the next is more complicated and I'm curious what you would do. It has the dreaded steering wander. It's not horrible empty just tiring to drive at highway speeds and kind of nerve wracking. Anyways it's got a lot of new parts, red head gear box, steering stabilizer, new ***** joints ext. My trusted mechanic checked it all out and said everything looked new in the front end. PO seemed to be chasing this problem. My mechanic said he usually puts shims in the ball joints to make the truck drive better. He suggested "trying" new ball joints but couldn't garuntee it would fix the issue.
I've read a lot of the posts on dead wobble ect and was curious if you guys would "try" the fix. He said it could run as much as $800.
that worked on my 05 f-250.......cost was about a buck and a quarter....install in 30 minutes.
granted , there was probally some underlying problem that someone will eventually nail on the head after every single part in the front end is replaced.......I opted for the stop gap solution and it worked fine.
path of least resistance and lightest impact on the pocket.
Thanks guys, I will probably give that a try. A guy I met did the dual stabilizers and it helped his. Just for piece of mind I am going to get an alignment with new track bar and make sure it's perfect with the right castor. Then I will try the dual stabilizers. I hate to use money to fix stuff when I could use on chrome!
99 to 04 usually steer great...ebay has stainless studs and nuts for the exhaust...Use em..
Don't need dual stabilizers unless you have monster tires...all the front end parts need to be in excellent condition. Have someone get inside the truck and rock the wheel to see if there are any loose joints....Make sure front springs are not shot..X's work great with these truck's.
Thanks will do. Only have 285s so no monster tires here. I was under the impression this was a chronic problem on these trucks like the exhaust.. If not it gives me more hope that I will get it ironed out!
