Hi all, I've been wanting an Excursion for a few years. Finally, I won an ebay auction for a 2000 Excursion 7.3. The seller didn't provide much info and only a few pictures so I knew I was either going to get a good deal or have to fix a lot, and I am no mechanic. I was relieved that it turned out better than I expected. Looks pretty decent from 20 feet away. Drove it 370 miles home no problems. I am pleasantly surprised to fit two car seats in the 2nd row and have someone able to sit next to them.
Anyway, through all of my lurking, I seem to recall a thread on here for asking stupid questions about the truck. Can't seem to find it, so I'll start with one.
When I turn the ignition to "ON" I can hear what sounds like a compressor in the background. Not sure what this is for. (AC is off) Maybe I have airbags in the rear? Not really sure.
First of all congrats on the purchase man....excellent choice of motor IMHO I believe this is the thread you were looking for...it was started by Apoc a little while ago https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...k-it-here.html or you could always just ask you questions here and we'll all try and help. Oh and if you haven't already make sure you update you location in your profile....one of may be near by and can lend a hand other than that welcome and congrats on the purchase....oh and pics are a must around here lol
Thanks, profile updated. I will get pics soon. Going to attempt the overhead console computer soldering project soon. I'm assuming that is why it doesn't work.

Welcome to the club!
Maybe what you're hearing is the rear fan? The motor is located in the rear passenger side of the truck and can be controlled independently.
Welcome---good purchase! I have a V 10 so if its diesel related I wouldn't know about the noise. Sessland has a good idea. There is a control on the upper console which allows you to control the fan and temp in the rear or allow the 2nd row occupant to do so. The backseat control is on the headliner in front of the 2nd row. The other thing about an X is that while you may think a noise is coming from one place you can be off on location as it echoes like crazy
I have a 7.3 as well and it sounds to me like you are hearing the vacuum pump under the hood. Diesels dont create vacuum like a gasser. Vacuum is needed to control the HVAC vent movements and other things. Therefore diesels have a pump, either engine driven, or in our case an electric pump under the hood on the passenger side. So if my assumption is correct, just learn to live with that sound, it's totally normal.
