Back up lights

Back up lights
Hey guys and gals, I'm workin on my backup lights on my 82' f100, I think I need a new backup switch, but my question is I checked the two wires coming off the switch and it seems to be hot! When I check the two wires with a tester it lights up? I also removed the wires and checked them they still test hot. They aren't supposed to be hot are they. They should only be hot when I am in reverse or am I wrong? Any help will be apparicated. Thank you.

One wire will be hot all the time if the keyswitch is in run. The other one will be hot if the switch is made. Make sure you are looking at the black/pink wire, not the two red/blue wires. The two red/blue wires are the neutral safety, though they would only be hot when the key is in the start position.
