I have a 2005 expedition that my wife mainly drives it's starting to make a noise off and on, sounds like from the front. The noise comes on after driving it for a bit and only when driving slow for example parking or a drive thru. The noise will go away if she puts it in park or 1 to 2 seconds duration without placing in park. What can it be? Thanks
I would need more detail about the sound before I could venture a guess. Also, I'm confused about putting it in park without putting it in park. Do you mean that it's in gear or in neutral? Is it a 4WD vehicle?
My wife says it like a rattling noise and it's in gear when the noise comes on but if she were to put it in park it goes away . If it's in gear and she doesn't put it in park when it comes on it will last a second or two. It's not a 4wd. Thanks
Thanks for the clarification.
It seems like it would have something to do with the transmission. I know that these transmissions like to be serviced right on time. Have you had the fluid flushed and the filter changed? This might make a difference.
If there is something loose, that also can rattle, but I wouldn't know without looking under your vehicle. See if there's anything out of place. Hopefully this will give you somewhere to start.
I just bought it a few weeks ago and it haven't done it till after the transmission was serviced but it has been driven a lot more after it was seviced. What could have been left loose that can make that type of noise?
Not really anything, but might have bumped a heat shield, or bent the cooling lines or something so it's close enough to touch when the engine vibrate sufficiently when the rpm drops on engaging a gear. Best thing to do: Get a friend you trust to engage, disengage gears and listen under the car to try to pinpoint where it comes from
If you have air suspension I would take a look at the rubber isolator mounts for the air compressor. When those deteriorate the compressor makes a lot of noise.
