3/4ton lug nut question?

So i have a 79 3/4 ton truck and the front left wheel loosen up on me while driving and i know i tightened it i double check all that kind of stuff but a guy told me i have the wrong lug nuts and i need ones with a bigger head on them like the one ton with a 1 1/16 hex? i have 1/2x20 with a 13/16 hex is this the right size for my truck? I was told this size bottoms out on the hub and it may seem toght but its really not

The size of the external hex isn't what would make a difference there, it's the depth of the nut - is it as long as the studs (minus the wheel), or does it bottom out? You can get longer ones or open-backed ones with the same thread.

I have the opened end style and it seem to tighten down good but some how the one tire mushroomed out the lug nuts and thats when i got told the if i had the ones with the bigger head it wouldn't do that

If it's open-ended, it's not bottoming out in the sense of not going all the way onto the stud. But you do need to be sure that the seat geometry matches your wheels, i.e. tapered/acorn vs shank/mag, etc.

What do the lug nut seats on the wheels look like? And how does the size compare? It looks like the holes in the wheels might be large enough that the small ones are barely catching - the big ones would help with that.

I used these on my last 3/4 ton with 1/2" lugs. They worked pretty good, but I wasn't run in the newer style steel wheels either.

Sometimes you can find them at a local tire shop.

The seats on the rim seem to be fine but the lugs DO sit in decebtly deep (right to the bottom edge of the hex) but if i order those buldge acorn lug nuts i think that would fix my problem wouldnt it

I think it would do the trick, but that's just one mans opinion...

Just so it does not catch you off guard. This style lug nut usually has a smaller hex, probably 3/4", as they are also used on wheels that have small lug nut holes and use a thin wall socket.

My 75 used what's shown in the middle pic, my 86 and 87 use the bigger ones but have a 9/16" thread.
Those "bulge acorn" style ones were used on CV, GM, and Town cars with "locking" wheel covers.
You should be able to use the middle ones ok (13/16 " wrench size?) Is the smaller -NG- one 3/4""?

The biggest problem is he is using a newer steel wheel that is designed for a 9/16" stud and nut and they usually have a larger conical seat area on the nut. While not a perfect fix, I think the bulge acorn lug nuts should work.

Know what you mean AK.
OT, sort of, notice the wear pattern on the 1 1/16" nut. I've had problems with the taper squeezing down on my trucks making it difficult to put on the lug bolts. Hard to run a tap through the nuts.

It is a 13/16 socket for the ones im running and i found these ones https://www.google.com/search?q=dorman+611016&client=ms-android-sprint-us&hl=en-US&source=android-browser-type&source=lnms&tbm=shop&sa=X&ei=HnE-VcHPL5CgoQSx44CoCA&ved=0CAcQ_AU#spd=47649181527440 73757

It has a 13/16 hex for the drive and it has a bigger flare so im thinking these would hold better then the buldge ones possibly??
