New Owner

Hey All,

I just became the owner of a very old f250, its a 1990 f250 custom, with a 5 speed, 5.0L.

at some point in its life, the previos owners converted it to run off a edelbrock 1406, elmimnating the computer. It also only has 1 functioning fuel tank, Im guessing eliminating the computer made it impossible for the dual tank setup to work.

anyways, when I got the truck, the PO thought the starter was messing up, I replaced the starer and starter relay, and it did not fix it, so I put a new battery in it, and it worked for a while, but today after a long trip it would not start.

I let it sit for about 1 hour, then went to start it and it started up without any issue. I tested the after I turned it off again, and it read about 13V off, and 13.6 when running. Are these numbers typical? I have a new alternator and was thinking about putting it on because what ive read online says you should see abour 14.5-16v when running, but I don't know if this applys to these trucks because this was for different vehicles.

SOme notes, the PO bypassed the ignition switch, and use a push button starter. Its also uses battery shut off switch, so the process to start the car is turn the key ignition on, then turn the electrical switch on, and then push a button to start the truck. Im planning to eliminate all of this later on, so that it starts like it should. because of this being in there, there is about 7' of 4 guage wire that runs from the starter relay into the cab, and then back to the battery this is ran to the push button ignition. SO this could be responsible for the low voltage when running.

one more quick question, what do you guys think could cause it to have a smell of gas when stoped at a stoplight? or stopsign, no smell of it when idling, after starting, I seems to only be from coming to a stop after rolling.

If the carb float level is set too high it may slosh into the intake when coming to a stop or taking a hard turn… that may cause it to stink. Check the float level.
