I am about to purchase a pipe and was looking at the connections and everything else today while wrestling that transmission when I noticed that on the left side of the motor (looking from the front of the truck) that the header pipe goes into the down pipe. Now, looking at pictures of the downpipes on youtube etc. It doesn't look like aftermarket pipes have that connection? COuld somebody give me some info on this to help me out????? TLDR: looks like exhaust is connected to the downpipe and aftermarket pipes don't look like they have that little intersection.
There are pipes that run from each manifold up to a collector at the back of the turbo(Up-pipes).
Then the down pipe exits the turbo and runs down the back of the engine.
They do NOT connect to each other.
And YES, you need to cut/modify your firewall to fit the new down pipe. I hope you only got a 3" DP or you will cutting and modifying a LOT
Ok, and I got the 3" down pipe with 4" back. It felt like the left side pheader ran into the downpipe. maybe they are really close together. I'll check it out some more tomorrow.
I will be down there tomorrow, also another question I have is will I have to cut the firewall to install the downpipe????
Everyone always says they needed to work the firewall to fit in a 3in down pipe. Mine went in no problem with no modification needed. So you might get lucky too.
Also, I was told by someone a lot smarter than me that a 4 inch is sufficient for most daily driver/street trucks. I've had no problems with my 4 inch.
Sound is important to me, but performance and reduced egt is most important....
I know a lot of folks on here have the diamond eye...would like to hear from someone with the aFe setup
Not froml a creditable source, but I heard the 5" caused more egts which is the reason I went ahead and got the 4" because I don't really need the extra sound. Gotta keep this as a daily.....
That's far from the truth. I've run 3.5 straight pipe, 4" straight pipe and 5" pipe with 5" stack and saw an improvement each time and that was modded with 180/80's and stock turbo

I didn't know at the time, and I am kinda new to the whole diesel performance deal, so I just went ahead and got a 4". Seemed like a good compromise because the truck is already somewhat loud with the stock exhaust I just want to hear the turbo and let it breath some more.
