I have a 94 F150 2 WD with a 355 open diff. and I am considering buying (not just for the rear end) a 89 f150 4 WD with a 355 limited slip rear diff and am wondering if the rear diff"s will swap with ease---Thx

What do you plan to put in the front? becuase you can't put a limited slip in the front.

Primary rig is:
95' F-150 EB 300/6 5 spd with 4" Superlift, MSD, Ram Air, Gibson Exhaust, and coming are some BFG MEATS

Then theres:
88' F-250 Superduty 351 + c6
92' Thunderbird 3.8L V-6 FOR SALE!
95' Mercury Cougar 4.6L V-8
80' E-350 300/6 and a
3 spd column shifter baby.

The newest addition to the Ford family is a 99' Mustang GT 4.6L

The gear ratio's are the same 355---I just want to have a limited slip axle in my 2 wheel drive so it will truly be 2 wheel drive----I plan on swapping the entire rear end assemblies

the rear end housing is identical.
the only difference is where the drive shaft hooks to the rear end yoke, I think the 89 rear end hooks up directly to the U-joint on the drive shaft where your 94 has an "adapter plate".
I would just remove the plate from the u-joint and hook up that way.
I put the rear end from my 94 into my uncles 89 but I didn't have the adapter plate so i changed the yoke.
Also make sure the 89 has the sensor in it for your speedo / ABS.
Good luck,
Aaron

Mustanggt221 I was curious as to why a limited slip unit cannot be used in the front end? Are you refering to limited slips and the use of auto hubs? I just bought a trac-lok for my ifs dana 44 but I do have manual warns- am I forgetting anything? Thanks.

The reason why you don't put a trac-loc limited slip in the front, is because there is way to much wear on them compaired to the rear. It will wear out very quickly, when its engaged. Thats why it is better to go with a locking differential, depends on how you drive and where.

OK, I see. You bring up a very good point that I didn't consider. Thanks for the input-now the ole light bulb is burning upstairs! haha I wonder if power-trax has a performance locker for the ifs dana 44 since I am really partial to the mechanical lockers over the air/electronic types (yea, personal preferance). Thanks once again!

The sensor on the 94 is used for speedometer and for ABS.
Some 89 had ABS so it needed the sensor. the 89 has a cable from the tranny for speedometer.
on your 94 - No sensor, no speedometer.
You could take the rearends apart and use the carrier from the limited slip and re-use your gears.
there is a "chopper wheel" (looks like a bicycle sprocket) that the sensor reads the teeth. It is mounted between the gears and the carrier. I'm not sure if the carrier is machined smaller to make up for the space that the sensor gear takes up. You would have to take measurements before you tear all apart and see or put up another post - maybe in the rear end section.
I think the chopper wheel gets mangled if you try to re-use it, it is not very expensive from Ford

you most definatly can put a limited slip in the front, and accualy you could get a truck stock with limited slip in the front. My '95 f-150 had stock limited slop front and rear. it was weird to drive with the hubs in because of the tires trying to go the same speed in corners. but realy how often do you drive with your hubs in, they will still under normal conditions out last the rears. and it is so nice to have all 4 wheels turning. i plan to probably go with the air lockers in the truck i have now front and rear just becase I like to not have the weird feeling when the hubs are in. but it was nice when I got off road for sure.

My 96 F150 came with trac-locs in both axles from the factory.
Wouldn't have any 4x4 without traction devices in both axles. Offroad grip is great!

Maybe the Trac lok in the front is different somehow, i'm not sure. I've always heard that you can't PUT a limited slip in the front because they will wear out very quickly.
