A link to my build thread (see last post on vapor lock problem) - I am getting a bit desperate to figure this issue out! After heat soak, truck absolutely will not start. New ignition coil, ignition switch, rebuilt carb, running 4 psi, new plastic fuel filter in engine bay, all rubber lines are up out of the way of the engine. What am I missing folks?? Is there some electronic component I am overlooking? Timing is set to 10*.
I have a clear inline fuel filter and can see that there is no fuel flowing through it. Once the engine is completely cold, the fuel flows freely and fills the carb again.
Well you know the problem. Finding the cause of no fuel is the remaining issue.
Not sure this year had them but the efi system had a plastic reservoir on the frame rail prior to the pressure pump. My 86 BR II had a filter in it , my 87, 88 & 90 didn't. A little research will reveal what psi the lift pumps had.

Good to know. After taking a closer look, it appears that in addition to the aftermarket fuel filter in the engine bay, the PO left the old fuel filter along the frame in place. Could it be as simple as a bad fuel filter? I would think that performance would be an issue, but I don't seem to have problems running, just hot starting.
ncranchero, my fuel pump is in the tank....would I also have a pressure pump? Never heard of one of those before, but then again, there's a lot I haven't heard of.

If it was originally EFI then yes, a reservoir and a pressure pump. I just don't know if an 87 460 was equipped with EFI.
...but along the frame rail I didn't see anything other than the filter. But who knows, it's easy to miss stuff when you aren't specifically looking for it. I'll double check later.
With all the stuff I've added, if I pull the fuel line from the carb, it seems to pump plenty of fuel after heat soaking. I'm throwing a lot of parts at the carb setup and my two main questions are:
1) Is there anything I can do to tune the carb (i.e. pressure, mixture, etc)
2) is it possible the carb is getting fuel after all and I have an electrical issue
2b) If the problem is electric in nature, what would be most likely to fail?
And thanks for all the replies so far. I like spit balling and thinking of non-obvious solutions.

Yep, live between Hickory & Charlotte. Boone's nice. A nephew graduated and niece is about to from Appalachian. My baby girl graduates the 9th from Gardner-Webb. I thought the hippies were all in Asheville!

Is your fuel line possible to close to the engine where heat can cause it to vapor lock? I had this happen on our generator.

I thought this might be the case, but I clipped the lines to the firewall and when this issue occurs, I can disconnect the fuel line from the carb and the fuel flows freely.
I would love to make it back to NC one day. I used to think Asheville was where it's at, but I've embraced the southern lifestyle lately and now if feels too yuppie for my blood. I'm more of a rip-down-dirt-roads-and-get-loud kind of guy these days. Plus, I think I might want a gun rack just for grins - not a great way to make friends in Asheville.

If originally a 5.8L EFI then the pumps ,including the one in the tank, were activated by a relay (green) through the inertia switch. The relay or even the inertia switch , IF still included, could fail. The relay more likely than the switch.
