[updated:LAST EDITED ON 14-Mar-02 AT 04:54 PM (EST)]I have a 1989 F-150, 4.9l. will not stay running. While cranking the engine, the eec relay and the wires going to it get real hot. I get current in it when the battery is hooked up, but when i disconnect the battery, I get continuity to ground on all four wires. I realize I have to chase the wires to find out where the short is but was wondering if this has happened to anyone else. Also the engine will not run or start on starting fluid. Getting ready to just blow the thing up. lol. this truck is driving me nuts. please help. thankx in advance. Frank.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 16-Mar-02 AT 08:10 AM (EST)]One of the wires from your EEC relay goes directly to ground. One of them goes to the inition switch. When you pull the relay off and look at the pins in the socket these are the smaller pins. The larger pins go to the battery (hot all the time) and the other one goes to the computer to tell the truck to run. I just went through all this. To test it remove the relay and put a jumper wire between the larger pins in the socket and the truck should start. DO NOT jump the smaller pins or you will blow the fuse link. If the truck starts with the jumper wire in there then check for 12VDC between the smaller pins with the key on. If you have that then the coil circut is working. You most likely have corrosion in the socket and that is where your problem is. That will the connections to get hot and drop the voltage thus the truck will not start.

Good Luck
thank you for the info. i found the problem. it was in the wires that go back to the battery. there was a short in them. now i got the truck running but coming back with the codes of 12, 33, 44. i think i got the 33 figured out but have no idea about the 12 and 44. any ideas? thx again.
