Trans Question

67 F100 2 Wheel Drive - 390 Engine
Hello Again All... How do I find Out what Transmission is in My Truck? I found a Number on the Bell Housing RF-C5AP-7976-A and from what I am reading that is a Cruise-O-Matic??? Will there be another number somewhere else or is this it? Reason I am asking is because I need to Fix/Replace the Parking Pawl in it and had assumed We had a C6 but then realized it wasn't once We dropped the Pan!!! So, Once it is identified what I have can someone tell Me how to change/fix the Parking Pawl or do I need to take it to a Trans Shop?

Thanks Again in Advance...

According to this: Ford FMX/352 mating questions | The H.A.M.B.

... it's an FMX? It's a lunker of an inefficient auto trans with crummy aftermarket support. I'd junk it and go C6.

Given the age of these trucks, ya better check that, ahemm, "390" to verify it is indeed a 390.

--especially since a 390 in a '67 wasn't factory stock. If the '67 came with an FE, it would have originally been a 352.

Ryan, If it has a green dot on the selector it is a C-O-M of the MX family. I don't disagree that the C6 isn't a better transmission, a parking pawl is a lot less expensive and a C6 6 swap.

How would I go about checking what the Motor actually is? When We got the Truck I was told that it is a recently rebuilt 390 but ya' never know what the guy before Me knew!

My VIN is F10YRA70980 which what I believe means: F10=F100, Y=352 CID 8-CYL, R=San Jose Ca, A70980=January 1967

The only way to tell the difference, is to measure the stroke.

Hio will direct you to his posting on how to check the stroke. It involves pulling a plug and poking a dowel down on top of the piston.

Thanks for the Reply Guys. Now I just have to see if I can find a reasonably priced C6! I searched the Forum and found HiO's post about measuring the Stroke. I will measure and reply back in a couple days just for Piece of Mind...

OK. We checked the Stroke. It is 3.75" which means it really is a 390!

We finally pulled the Engine and Trans from the Truck (Son wanted to Pull the Engine also so He could paint the Block and Clean it up nice). Now how do I know what C6 to get? I know I need one that fits a Big Block but how do I tell if it fits a Big Block and if it will bolt up to the Fly Wheel and if it is the correct length from front to Back, etc...? Are all C6 Transmissions for the most part the same? I believe I'll need a new starter as well (fairly inexpensive at AutoZone!)... As I am typing this I remembered that I need to do a search here on the forum but if anyone already has a link handy that can answer all My Questions I'd appreciate it...

1965/67 F100/350 352 (only V8 available) & 1965/72 F350 300 I-6: MX Cruise-O-Matic, which at one time was known as the BIG Cruise-O.

FMX introduced in 1969 Ford/Merc Passenger Cars. The only trucks to use it, were 1973/77 F350's with 300 I-6.

The MX trans pan, gasket and filter are different than FMX

C6 introduced in 1968 F100/350 with 360/390, used thru 1976. C6 has 17 trans pan bolt holes.

390 introduced initially in 1961 Galaxie/Thunderbird, in 1968 F100/350 along with the truck only 360.

C5AZ-6375-D .. FE Flexplate-1965/67 352 FX (car only) & MX (1965/67 F100/350 352 & 1965/67 390 car) / 1967/71 Car 390 C6 / 1968/76 F100/350 360/390 C6

FE C6 flexplate installed in 1966/67 Merc's with 410's; 1966/70 Ford/Merc's with 428's is not the same!

Thanks Bill / NumberDummy.... That info Helps. After reading here on the Forum I did learn that it does have to be a C6 for an FE Engine and that it sounds like I will need a shorter drive shaft for it. Also, the Cross Member will need moved back a few inches... Sounds like that's all... (I Hope!!!!!)

Anyone know of any good Salvage Yards that might have have some Donor Trucks? Or maybe I should look into finding a good Parts Truck to Rob Parts off of???

There are 3 basic bells from that era. The sm block is a flat top with the bolt hole 5 1/2in apart, the big block 429/460 is a flat top with the bolt holes 7 1/2in apart. Your truck FE is a round top.

I would suggest getting one from a 73-76 Ford pickup with a 360/390 engine. You need one from a truck because the shift arm runs horizontal -- along the oil pan. A car arm is down / but not that much.

That truck would also have the donor parts for power disc brakes and power steering too. You can buy a donor and get about everything needed for your truck.

Hope this helps

John
