Cool Çam swap

I have a 1988 F150, 5.0/C6 I just bought. I have a 1994 Mustang GT roller 5.0 HO converted to a carb in my 63 Merc. I was planning of swapping the cam from my 1963's 5.0 engine into my truck as I want to put a B303 or Trickflow cam in my 63 Merc. I know I will have to change the firing order on my truck, but what about the EFI? What do I do with that? Is there an easy fix or should I just throw the EFI in the woods and put Holley/Wieand carb combo on it? I figure if I have the cam laying around, why not throw it in the truck. Where is the cheapest place to buy full length and shorty headers for my truck?

That '88 5.0 has a flat tappet cam. You would need to use retrofit roller lifters to make it work. Not sure if you would be willing to do this as they are very expensive.

Sorry, it's not speculation. It's true.

This is from an online manual;
You can look it up here.

5.0L and 5.8L Engines

The 1993-96 5.0L engine uses roller lifters.

Remove the intake manifold.
Disconnect the Thermactor® air supply hose at the pump.
Remove the rocker arm covers.
Loosen the rocker arm fulcrum bolts until the rocker arms can be rotated off the pushrods.
Remove the pushrods. KEEP THE PUSHRODS IN ORDER, FOR INSTALLATION!
Using a magnetic lifter removal tool, remove the lifters. Wipe clean the exterior of each lifter as it's removed and mark it with an indelible marker, so that it can be installed in its original bore.

Ok thanks man. I was not trying to be a jerk, I just wanted the facts. Oh well, I guess my roller cam will go on ebay when I do the swap. I was not overly familiar with the late model specs on the 5.0's, I cut my ford smallblock teeth on a 1965 289!! I am a truck mechanic and have taken a liking to the roller 5.0's, now if I could only figure out that EFI crap.......LOL

I've learned just about all I know about EFI from this site but still have a lot to learn..

A truck mechanic eh? I have a question for ya.

What are the symptoms of a burnt valve? I have a problem with my 5.0 I'm trying to figure out. I have a pretty lengthy post with the details in the 87-96 truck section but don't think anyone over there will be able to help me.

I would appreciate any help!

What are your symptoms? I'm a 2nd period Truck and Transport apprentice and don't do much engine work yet, but this is what I learned in school. When you do a compression test on a head with a burnt valve you will find one cylinder with very little or no compression.

Common operating symptoms include hard starting, loss of power and uneven running with poor idle. Basically your engine is running without that cylinder. You may even find it ising a lot of oil too.

Wow, I guess I don't have a burnt valve! Thanks!

Good luck with your apprenticeship!

I'd still recommend checking though, as many replacement catalogues list OE hyd. roller cams as early as 1986 in Mustangs. Roller cams are sweet, but you can still make awesome power with a good flat tappet grind. You can check without having to remove the intake manifold if you remove a valve cover, remove a rocker arm, pull out a single pushrod, and measure its length. Call any parts store and ask what the length should be for a late model (roller) 5.0, because the flat tappet lifters are shorter, therefore the pushrods are longer. I can't remember the length off the top of my head, but I know when I went from flat tappet to hyd. roller, I had to buy shorter pushrods.

I am in no rush, I will wait to find out if it is a roller or not when I actually need to go into the engine for repairs. Mustangs got roller cams in 1985, but only in the carburated GT models for that year. When I put the 1994 roller 5.0 HO in my 63 merc I used a complete 1985 carbed stang GT ignition system and distributor because it was a vacuum advance unit, it's electronic and it had a steel gear on it from the factory.

If that steel gear is working, then you definately have a roller cam. A steel dizzy gear on a cast iron cam will chew each other up in 3,000 miles or less!

The 5.0 in my merc is a roller for sure, all GT Mustangs have roller cams after 1985. I am making 207HP/286ftlbs at the wheels with my 1994 roller 5.0 HO powered 63 Meteor, not too bad for a factory cam with bolt ons. The Meteor had a 289 in it when I got it, I used it for 3 summers but when I tore it down for a rebuild, it was toast. I sold the good 289 parts and made $1000 from it. Got my new engine complete with 70,000KM on it for $1000, so I did ok on that deal. I told my wife a long time ago that if we ever divorced and she tried to take my car or sell it, I would burn it first!
