I have been reading various posts about paint colors. I went on paintscratch.com to confirm my color and from looking at the colors I think my truck is chrome yellow. However after looking at other users chrome yellow my truck looks more like orange or some variation. As I look under the hood I see the letter "Y" on the inside of the hood, top of the fenders and the firewall. These appear to be some type of marking from the factors possibly denoting the color code. The paint code Y in 73 is not listed on any of my sources. Please take a gander at my gallery and give me your assessment. Thanks!

 

that tag will not tell you the color, on the doorjamb you should have a sticker or in the glovebox there will be a sticker . not sure where they put it on 73's, there will be a spot on there that will depict the color code. i do not beleive ford put an individual mark on certain pieces of the truck to find the code

 

This Y is it on top of the paint or under it?

If it was desginated to be yellow, the marking would be under the paint ....Right?

Maybe read the color code for the rating plate.

Rating plate says that "Y" is the color. The markings are on top of the paint. Paintscratch's data and the color of my truck don't match. The paint is the original as I bought the truck from my grandfather who was the original owner in '73.

Is there a 5-6 digit nmber aboe the DSO code ?

 

Since I know so much about the history of the truck I can tell you that this was no special order. There is no 5 or 6 digit number above the DSO. I double checked the rating plate and it's "color Y". The truck has never been hit, repainted or the door replaced to doubt the correctness of the rating plate. Did you happen to take a look at my gallery to see the color of the truck? This is becoming quite mysterious.

What is the VIN# of that truck?

 

VIN F10GCS27859. From looking at the dates stamped on various parts throughout the truck it appears to have been built in July or early August. From looking at the colors on the link it appears the color is either bold orange or chrome yellow. The chrome yellow almost looks orange but. I agree with you that my truck is certainly orange. Still the question remains about the color code coinciding with the color for that year. Once again this is an all original truck to include the paint. I'm baffled. Thanks once again for your insight.

You are right about the orange 73 Custom. It's one of a kind around here. I just wish we could figure out the paint code matching the color and why there isn't a source to varify.

Well it says Chrome Yellow on the paint chart.

The chrome yellow I was used to is a more bold yellow )with like a silver tinge).

 

I saw another user's "chrome yellow" on a '72 and it wasn't the same as on my '73. I believe the chrome yellow for 72 is different from the one for 73. From 73-79 the chrome yellow looks like just plain orange. That's why I started this thread.My only source for finding the color of my truck were the sources listed on this website. Are we stumped yet?
