I've got a 64 f100 with the 292 and 2 barrel carb. I've noticed that when I push the gas (not choked) it will kind of quit for a half second before it will rev up and then it will stumble. It revs perfectly fine when it is choked though.. Any idea on what's up? I think it's time for a rebuild but could it possibly just need a adjustment?
Definitely, then. Get a can of Berryman's carb cleaner and a genuine autolite or holley gasket/rebuild kit. They are pretty simple to disassemble and reassemble especially with all the websites and YT videos out there.
There should be 4 different accelerator pump arm positions, normally it is in the 2nd for normal temps.
Maybe a couple hours from start to finish, if you count parts soaking. Don't get in a hurry be methodical and you'll do a first class job the very first time. Mostly it's replacing any rubber parts (to include accelerator pump diaphragm and check valve) and gaskets, blowing out orifice and such. Watch the videos, read the forums here and elsewhere and you'll be a pro in no time.
Bogging down, hesitating, stumbling from a dead stop or when accelerating at speed is indicative of a defective accelerator pump and check valve.
1963/64 F100/350 292 would have come with an Auto-Lite model 2100 series 2V carburetor. The carb kit comes with the gaskets, these two parts and etc and is this:
D4AZ-9A586-A (replaced C2AZ-9A586-B) .. 2100 series Auto-Lite/Motorcraft 2V Carburetor Kit (Motorcraft CT-499-D) / Available from Ford & auto parts stores.
My 63 292 4sp does the same thing unless I pull the choke out slightly to where the choke just begins to function. Had the carb rebuilt by a reputable mechanic and it still does it. Not much of an issue but kinda annoying so I drive around with the choke slightly on. Wish I knew what is going on, I'll check the accelerator arm position as Tedster suggested.
Maybe someone will chime in with a cure.
As ND said. Accelerator pump. May not be any need to open the carb up. Start by changing the accelerator pump diaphragm. When I was driving mine regularly it needed replacement about every five years. Also if it sat for any amount of time it may have stuck and tore on restart. Changing the pump diaphragm is about a 15 minute job.
I'm just gonna do a complete rebuild. I went to NAPA and found the kit for $30 but since the truck is my daily driver I need to find some free time to actually do the rebuild.. Is this the cheapest place to buy it? It seems kinda high for just a bunch of gaskets and things

FTE Ford dealer parts dept sponsors sell the genuine Ford kit (D4AZ-9A586-A) cheaper, but they are located in NV & WA .. so shipping charges will apply.
MSRP: $40.08.
FTE sponsor silverstatefordparts.com online price: $22.08 / Gaudin Ford - Las Vegas NV
FTE sponsor horizonpartsguy.com online price: $24.45 / Horizon Ford - Seattle (Tukwila) WA
Dennis Carpenter (DC) is located in Concord NC (800-476-9653), has the kit listed as C2OZ-9590 / My 2012 DC 1957/66 truck repro parts catalog lists it at $19.50.
Here is a helpful page on the rebuild steps and estimated time to complete. It usually takes me longer.....
Shh!! Don't scare him away Jim...
Now I like a cold beer now and then as much as the next guy, but he claims forty five minutes just to remove the 2bl carb off a 64? I think he meant "four to five".
The guy must be a union mechanic. Estimated time that he listed is 4 hours and 55 minutes. What a laugh. My son and I put my 292 back in the truck and had it running in about 2 1/2 hours. 5 man hours, and it was on the stand with no flywheel or clutch bolted to it yet when we started.
