performance or reliability? For reliability, start with a blue spring update (oem), oem fuel filters, oem oil filter and cap, 5w-40 synthetic oil, cat ec-1 coolant and a coolant filter, egr delete and a min 140 amp alternator.
performance - studs, tuner is most common.
First thing on my list, an OBDII monitor to see what condition it's in. Temp difference between oil and coolant, fuel injection control module (FICM) voltage, battery and charging system condition, and high pressure oil system health can all be checked from the drivers seat and monitored occasionally while you own her.
Factory updates for known issues include:
-A new stiffer spring for the fuel pressure regulator will raise fuel pressure at the injectors.
-A new design on the turbo oil drain improves oil flow out of the turbo.
-A new design on the turbo oil feed line eliminates it possibly shedding the flexible lining.
-A new design on the stand pipes (under the valve cover) includes a Teflon support ring behind the rubber o-ring to reduce the tendency of the o-ring to wiggle around as the pressure fluctuates, causing it to wear.
-A new design on the dummy plugs for the same reason as the standpipes.
-A new design branch tube connector to replace the snap to connect (STC) fitting between the high pressure oil pump and the plumbing to the injectors. The snap part of the STC fitting is a common failer.
You truck has the later designed EGR cooler that often fail, especially if the oil cooler clogs up and limits coolant flow to it. Aftermarket units are available that have CARB approval, or better yet an EGR cooler delete kit would be a great mod.
I think a thorough flush, fresh silicate free coolant and a coolant filter is also a good idea.
I've probably forgotten something but that should be plenty to keep you (and your wallet) busy for a while
Congrats on the truck!
After the stuff I mentioned above comes replacing the plastic CAC tube and boots, alternator/charging system upgrades, head studs, then a tuner or FICM upgrade and tuned, larger injectors and turbo, maybe a lift, wheels/tires, lights, bumpers... The posibilities are endless
