Upgrading exhaust

Hi!

My cats are shot, getting codes on them. I figured I'd upgrade my exhaust instead of buying the super expensive stock OEM cats. It's much cheaper to just build a new stainless exhaust anyway, at least here. I was thinking to go with a welded stainless dual exhaust from the manifolds to the back with an X pipe, not sure if I'll do headers, depends on price and I've heard it's a royal pain to get the manifolds off..

Anyway, to my question: If I upgrade my exhaust to dual high flow cats, an X pipe and dual exhaust all the way with mufflers and all, do I need to reprogram the PCM? I'm not looking for any power gain, I'm just looking to get a little nicer sound of it, though not too loud, and cure my check engine light for the cats.

No, as long as the original O2 sensors are reinstalled.

Well, after looking at the battles other people have fought with the exhaust manifolds, I'm not gonna bother taking those off unless I really have to, and headers won't do much unless I tune it so I'm just gonna go with a new exhaust from the manifolds and back. I really hope I will never have to remove those manifolds... lol

Yes, even on my smaller 4.6, I am not sure if I could put my headers on without removing the heads. Since they are off anyway, I am preparing for the time when I can put stainless all the way back.

I removed them off of a 97 Navigator I once owned in order to put shorty headers on. I wasn't concerned about saving the manifolds so after pulling them back a bit from the heads I cut them into pieces with a sawzall and 2 new blades. I would say between jacking up the front, removing the wheels, the wheel well skirts, and then finally the manifolds took about an hour. The hardest part of that job was getting the new driver's side shorty header installed.
