noise

I have a 1988 ford 4x4 and there is a popping noise coming from the front end somewhere. Well I think it is the front end. It almost always makes it when I sit on a small incline where I dont have to hold the brake to make it just sit there. When I take of a small pop comes from the front end somewhere. It has new ball joints and shocks. Anyone know what it could be?

I once put new ball joints in a '67 Mustang (Ford didn't exactly spend too much developing THOSE frontends) and about 2-3 months later had the same thing happen to me. The nut for the left lower ball joint had backed off about 3/16 of an inch causing a little play when the supsension was loaded and unloaded.

I would start there. The same thing can happen with the shocks.

Good luck.

Thanks. Damn, thats a lot of work just to see if that nut has backed off but I guess I will check it out. I just took the shocks off today and drove it around the block and it still made the noise so I have that ruled out.

Just pull the wheel and grab the rotor with a bear grip (make sure to use a jackstand) and try moving it up and down.
