Smog Pump

I don't think you can. My bronco has a 351W with V belts. The smog pump belt broke one time on a fishing trip without me knowing it. By the time I had figured out what happend, exhaust gas had traveled up the plumbing of the air pump and burned up the diverter valve for the pump. Basically, exhaust backflowed through the pipe and destroyed the diverter valve.

I could be wrong, but thats my experience.

There are check valves in the system which were rusted out on yours - that's why the diverter valve melted. If the check valves are OK, the exhaust won't come back.

Mike
No, you can't run without the smog pump because your belt won't work without that pulley, and there's no good reason to dump it anyway. It's cheap & easy to replace if it's ruined, and it doesn't use enough power for you to notice if you deleted it anyway. Keep everything running like it was designed and the truck will be MUCH more reliable and easier to diagnose.
