Stiction or something else...

I completed the FICM test and Glow Plug tests this weekend and today at lunch.

The FICM is working as well as a brand new one with 48.8 volts with key on, 48.8 volts with initial key on during initial buzz, and 48.6 during cranking. So FICM appears good.

All glow plugs are testing good with continuity.

The KOEO and the KOER tests both come back with good results and the alternator and batteries test good so it isn’t a voltage drop or bad batteries.

The EGR valve was slightly sooted up and was cleaned last week, but wasn’t dirty enough to be hanging up.

I haven’t tested the injectors but suspect that there is a stiction issue with them when cold due to the symptoms that occur.

The truck runs great when at operating temp, but not so well when cold. If not fully warmed up it bucks under light and/or heavy throttle until warm and has an rough idle until warm. It also has a long crank when cold (5-8 seconds on average). No white smoke that is noticable.

I am due for an oil change within the next 1500 miles, as well as, the fuel filters. I have been researching the stiction issues and wonder if that could be the problem.

Do any of you fine gents have any suggestions or where I could look to next?

Since your due for an oil change, try 5W40 synthetic and make sure you have OEM filters and caps. You need to scan for codes. Soft codes won't set the CEL. An ficm can still be going out with good voltages showing. Do you have the blue spring upgrade for fuel press?

scanned and have no soft codes.

I will run with the 5w40 and try that.

FICM is rebuilt and is maybe 2 years old.

And I don't have the spring upgrade for fuel pressure.

Blue spring, fuel conditioner in a healthy dose and change oil and filter, fuel filters. Watch a new see. You could need to be polishing some spools. But I would wait and see.

I see injector contribution testing in your future. How many miles on that 2004?

Stiction is the name given when internal injector parts stick or drag not opening and closeing properly. These additives help with the injector lubrication.
Injection is electricaly controled hydraulicly moved by High Pressure engine oil.
You can have oil stiction or fuel stiction with the ultra low sulpur diesel it removed most of the lubrication properties of the diesel.

So..... I'm getting really **** mileage. And I pulled over to nap and left it running. When I started out again she stumbled and tripped over herself. She came out of it quickly enough but grey smoke came out. Is that stiction? Apologies for the hijack

Unlike the big rigs, these trucks of ours don't like to idle for extended periods of time.

So the stumble and tripping over itself was normal?

Based upon your description, it does sound like this could be stiction. Your comment that it smooths out once the engine reaches operating temperature is my clue- specifically, once your oil heats up most stiction cases will clear themselves up. I've been reading good things about Hot Shot's Secret stiction oil additive- you may want to try that with a fresh oil change of Rotella T6 synthetic 5W40 and see if that helps.
