Hey guys, I recently got a 1992 Bronco with the 351W. The truck has a problem with either the transmission, the transfer case, or maby the rear axle. It will drive in 4x4LOW but nothing else. It won't drive in 2High or 4High. I'm not too sure what transfer case or transmission I have. I know that the transmittion is a 3-speed overdrive, and if I remember right, it is out of an F250/F350. The transfer case seems really stiff and doesn't want to move very well. I was thinking that something might be wrong with the transfer case, and maby somehow the gears/whatever determines 2hi/4hi/4low is messed up and is letting only 4low run. Maby even the transfer case is really gunked up and it's not getting in the gear real good, I'll have to check that tonight. I've heard every thing from its the transmittion, to (my guess) the transfer case, to even the gears in the rear axle are stripped out. The rear driveshaft is hooked up and works. The axle is code number on the door says 19, which is a 8.8" 3.55 non-LS, but I seriously doubt if that is stock. The Bronco had high-rail gear on it, so they may of changed the axles, too. Any help you guys could give me would be great, thanks.
The Bronco has manual hubs, and the transfer case uses a stick/level to change between the running modes. And I just discovered that I seriously doubt that it is the rearend as when we brought the vehicle to my house he didn't have the hubs locked, which means that it had to be pulling using the rear driveshaft and not the front axle. After some messing around, I realised the transfer case isn't all that stiff, it actually goes through 2hi/4hi/4low pretty easy. Alittle too easy actually. I still think that the transfer case is shot, the Bronco won't move in 2hi or 4hi, only 4low. I don't see why it would work in 4low but not the other two if it was the transmission. Then agian, I'm no expert on vehicles, either.
Well, not being familiar with the non-stock setup in your truck, I can't be completely certain however, the only logical answer would be the T-case. Sounds like the regular gearing for the high portion of the case is shot. The low gearing is still intact. Not knowing which T-case you are dealing with, its hard to be more specific. If the truck is still capable of moving, the tranny should be ok. Engine power is still transferable to the wheels so its getting from the tranny to the T-case. The problem lies within the T-case.
The stock setup in a '92 would have been an E4OD auto tranny and an electronically shifted Borg-Warner 1356 transfer case.
check the linkage of the shift **** (4x4 lever)..i screwed mine up one time and had to get it realined...also on my 92 Bronco custom you have to have it in neutral not park to shift into and out of 4 low...
Thanks, greystreak, thats what I was thinking. Broncobigtire, I was kind of wondering about that too, I'll have to check that out also. And I know about having to be in neutral to switch in an out of 4low, my 92 F150 is like that, so I figured the Bronco would be the same. BOJOFASO, it doesn't have a body lift, it's all suspension. You know, now that I think about it, the previous owner of the vehicle would switch back and forth between 2hi and 4hi on the fly (even though I'm pretty sure this transfer case isn't designed for that), yall think that could be why the other two don't work but 4low does?
shifting between 2hi and 4 hi on the fly is not damageing as long as the hubs are locked in and it is at a reasonable speed.you just cant shift into 4 lo without stopping.
