My 2005 excursion Limited 4X4 spit a plug out today. Truck has 133,333 miles. Plugs originally changed out at 75k.
In March 18th it spit the 5th one back on the drivers side. That exhaust leak I heard was the plug. Was able to run a cleaning tap, and insert a new plug and has been holding. Friday the 2 plug on drivers side ejected breaking the COP as well. I ran a cleaning tap again and then reset a new plug and coil. Sunday I changed the remaining 8 plugs and double checked the 2 that had previously been replaced. I found 3 more plugs that where not tight and seated.
Well today, number 2 ejected and with it the threads. My concern is that all the holes need Time Serts installed. With 133K on the truck is it worth to try and do it on the vehicle, or bite the bullet and pull the heads?
2 of the plugs looked like they had burnt coolant, intake leak?
What else should I look at and consider? Appreciate your thoughts.
I had one plug pop out about 3 years ago with about 120k on it. Went ahead and pulled the heads and had inserts put in all the holes.....did a valve grind at the same time. Was planning on keeping the truck for a long time so it was worth it to me.
Does your truck have a 2005 engine? This isn't common for post 2003 heads as they have more threads than the earlier designs. Did they get put in to torque spec or just goodntight? Was any anti seize used?
look into carbon build up management. carbon build up will increase compression. there are various de-carb additives out there as well as looking into the fuel you use......unnecesary high octane gas will increase carbon build up. also, the newer natural gas sourced oils have leave the engines cleaner.
When the plugs where changed they were torqued down, both when originally changed and last sunday.
My mechanic was able to put an insert in, not sure which brand, not a timesert. Will let you know how it holds up. I believe that this summer I will end up pulling the heads and putting inserts in all the plug holes.
Torqued to what? There are a lot of differing opinions here and I'm just curious which values were present when yours failed. This will be affected by using or not using anti seize also. Do you know if your engine is the original one?
