"Widowmakers" Firestone RH-5
I am in the process of buying a 1961-1966 Mercury M500, not sure the exact year. I am pretty sure it has the dreaded widowmakers, and I being 16 and ignorant was just going to bring out my portable air compressor and pump up the tires to see if they hold air and drive it across town. But thankfully Stu otherwise known as truckdog62563 told me to read up on the wheels. I am glad I did, I have heard the stories of split ring wheels doing severe damage, and was even warned never to work one on in grade 11 shop class, BUT I never knew the Firestone RH-5 even existed. They would have most likely blown apart in my face, right when I was filling them full of air. I had looked over them for a split ring, but I did not think to look at the inside of the rim, I am heading over there to snap a few pictures today. I will keep everyone posted.

Your M500 is too large to be posting about it in this forum. Anything 2+ ton is supposed to go to Large Trucks over there. I've asked the moderator to move this thread. Please post any further info on this truck in the Large Trucks forum over there.

Glad to help on the widow makers. Stu

I'd suggest you give the young man some credit instead of trying to send him to a different forum. Over in the <47, 48-56, and 57-60 groups we welcome all sizes and everybody gets along great. No reason it can't be that way here.

Indeed, why have any categories at all? We could all just post everything in one big forum. Wouldn't that be a treat?

Yesterday ND said the same to another with an F600 and no issues but today I suggest the same and I'm forum police? Nice. Thanks.

Note where ND says
"And, you unknowingly typed this thread in the wrong forum. 1961/66 forum is mainly for F100/350's. Thread belongs in the LARGE TRUCK forum where you'll get more help.
I just asked a moderator to move your thread there."

I've disagreed with Bill before too. Back to the young man's original comment, the subject of widow makers applies to the small trucks (F-350s) as well as the big trucks. And an F/M-500 as a medium duty could arguably belong here more than on the large truck page. Not sure how the Canadians classed the M-500, whether as a 1.5 or 2 ton. No matter, the young man got his answer and has moved on to brake drums. Stu

This guy has three threads running.
The usual "wrong forum" is the guy with the F350 or Bronco who posts in "Large Truck" because their truck is so large to them.
I think we need another forum. "Rusted out non-running", or "Tree Growed Trough It" or "Field and Stream Find".

Stu: 1948/56 forum members own all sorts of trucks, so there would be no reason for them to type threads in the Large Truck forum, but some have.
This Large Truck forum is relatively new (as are the 1957/60 & Uni forums), while the 1961/66 and etc. forums have been around since circa 1999.
IMO, if people have 1957 and newer 500 and larger series trucks, they should post here, instead of clogging up the other forums with these elephantine behemoths.
Most members of these forums that have F100/350's won't know diddly-do about larger trucks, and looking up parts for them can be mind-boggling, especially brake and rear axle parts.
