A/C comp running while using heat

So I was doing my coolant flush yesterday and turned on the heat, both front and rear, to move any old coolant out of piping and cores. I notice that the rear was not blowing as "warm" as the front.

I did notice that the compressor was clicking on and off the whole time. A/c pipes coming off of accumulator were freezing up/getting cold/frosty.

Is it normal for the compressor to do this when the heat is on? If not, any troubleshooting tips would be greatly appreciated.

If you had it on defrost, yes, the AC compressor will run.

ALL cars do it to remove the humidity as not to fog up the windshield.

The only two positions where the compressor does not run are floor and vent. All other run the compressor. I've been contemplating adding a cutoff switch. I know others have done it but the thread escapes me at the moment.

Right. I actually found this out last year. I noticed the A/C ran when in the vent/floor position. I never use that position, but last year for some reason I set it there and noticed my feet were freezing.

Thank you all for the replies. I knew that when it was on defrost that the A/C would run but didn't expect it in the other positions. It was in vent/floor for the front and panel for the rear. Next time I run it I will do just floor and see what the compressor does. Thanks.

One more. The third position is OFF.
