I was going to replace my fuel filter this last week and the manual said there was a eletronic auto shut down switch (if you get in an accident) under the dash by the brake pedal. I looked under there but could not find it. If there is anyone out there with the same truck that has done this I need to releive pressure on the gas line. This sounded like it would be easy to unplug this shut off switch and start the truck a few times till it quit then change filters and plug it back in.
If anyone can tell me where this plug is at and what it looks like or if there is another way of taking pressure off the fuel line.
Thanks
heh or you can do it my way, just dont worry about it. wrap a rag around it and then pull off the line. i have not seen enough pressure come out to make anybit of a fuss. unless you are worried about getting a little bit of fuel on yourself.
I am trying to remove the Fuel filter. I got one of those tools and it really is confusing. How do I get this damn thing off. I have it into and around the thing. Do I "Open" the so called scissors up? So it will release the plastic nubbs?
How stupid
Thanks lxman1, pulled kick panel off and there it was. I also found that I can not get the fuel lines off the old filter.
Turncad what is this tool you are talking about. I am a novice when it come to working on vehicles. If anyone can tell me about this tool and where to get one would be greatly appreciated.
The tool looks like a pair of scissors with a cone that forms on the end when closed. It is shaped like scissors so you can open the cone end to fit around the fuel line. You close the scissors and shove the cone into the fitting and that causes the splines inside the fitting to come away from the insde lip. Anyway it isnt to hard to figure out once you have the tool. You should be able to get one at your local parts store.
I used to have the same truck and loved it. I had to sell it at 190,000 since I couldnt get my family of 4 in the truck. It still ran strong and looked great if you used the color restore wax. Good Luck with the filter.
You don't have to turn off the inertia switch (accident cut off) in order to replace the fuel filter, just remove the cap where you fill up the tank. You also sdon't really need a special tool to remove the fuel filter, just put a screwdriver under the clip, and pry away.
I am having similar problems removing the lines from my filter on my 92 F150. I have no problem removing the retaining clips, however I can not get the lines off. I am afraid I will mess up the lines so I aborted the attempt. I have to use my truck to get to work.
just twist them back and forth to get them off after the clips are taken off. they should be just sliped on. i do not understand why removing the gas cap would realse the press, the fuel filter is under pressure due to it being right after the high press fuel pump that holds the press unless told not to. if you do it my way (egnore the intera switch and just unhook it anyways) bewarned that you should exspect a nice fuel shower (it left about a sqaure foot of gas on the ground, not counting my soaked arm)
